The GSG 16 modification thread

Since the picatinny rails are hollow plastic, has anybody tried mounting a heavy magnified optical scope, using an aluminum "MP5 Claw mount"?
As shown on a GSG-5:

It might work. Measured from top of the rail, to the top of where it would catch and its about 22mm.

Either way, you are clamping on plastic.

How hard is it to change a barrel??? Never did that before

It isnt hard. The body shells clamp around the barrel and the action. Once you get the bcg out, undo the handguard then you separate the 2 main upper halves and the barrel just falls out.

Google gsg 5 barrel swap. For all intents and purposes, the gsg5 and the 16 is the exact same mechanical firearm. Its just the shell thats different so they dont get sued.

I’ve been slacking off. Super busy with other stuff. Tonight I installed the GSG-522 kit.

Great looking, how hard was it to install the kit? And where did you get the kit?

Thanks

I got it on eBay a few weeks ago and only got around to installing it now. I believe they are also available from IRG now though...

The kit wasn't too hard to install. There are no real instructions, at least there weren't with mine, but there is an included exploded parts view of the gun that can help. I also suggest watching a GSG-16 or GSG-5 disassembly video on youtube before you start. If you are mildly technical it shouldn't be an issue. If you are the type that needs to follow exact instructions you may struggle a bit but it really isn't rocket science.

That's a nice mp5d clone! Few questions though, were did you get that rear sight from? Was the rear sight easy to install? Did you have to modify anything to install the rear sight? And do your front and rear sight align? Thanks.

The charging handle is not ambidextrous. The safety is but not the charging handle. There are a couple extra charging handles included in the kit, though. They seem to be angled differently and have the finger groove on the opposite end. So maybe one of the other charging handles is designed at a better angle for use from the other side... but yeah you are limited to installing it on that side only.

The rear sight is my design. It's a prototype but it is perfectly functional. It was meant to be part of a front/rear sight kit that would make the stock sights look more like H&K sights. Now with the 522 conversion kit being so widely available I kind of abandoned the front sight. I am going to redesign this one to work better with the 522 front sight.

My plan is for the final version to completely replace the rear sight block rather than install on top of it. That would completely change how the rear sight will be adjusted L/R so that's what I'm working on now. Having to force that screw through the plastic rear sight blade to change the blade/aperture is kind of a pain on the stock rear sight. So I hope to eliminate that part.

Walmart, just re design the rear sight base so that it will have a slot to take the airsoft rear drum. Probably a lot easier and will make the airsoft drum functional

Thank you for answering my questions. Please keep us updated on rear sight design and please make it available for purchase once your done with the final design cause I really want an "HK style" rear sight for my gsg 16. Thanks.

If only I have the courage and skills to modify the upper receiver like what incorrigible did to his gsg 16, I would have done that already. But knowing myself, I'll butcher my upper and might end up needing a new upper receiver which getting one is impossible. Lol

Hey Walmart,
How much plastic to Metal is in the 522 kit itself?

You're definitely adding some metal to the gun. The fore end and front sight are metal. The charging handle itself is much beefier. The mag release is metal. It doesn't really add any weight to the gun, it seems to be pot metal lol. But it's an improvement for sure.

There is also a pot metal insert that is supposed to cover the holes in the upper receiver after you remove the rail. It looks like absolute ####, so I made an extended version of my rail delete that serves the same purpose and doesn't look like unfinished pot metal.

Hey can you send me a link to this sight? It's possible. The only questions I have is if the sight geometry doesn't match the stock sight then it will require the base be adjusted to give a proper sight picture. Also not sure if people would prefer to order a sight and a base separately rather than just order a complete rear sight. I guess if it's metal it might be worth the trouble. I will look into it if you forward me the details.

My personal opionion is i rather get a sight base and use a functional drum. I am in no ways stepping down on your product, but having a non functional drum kinda defeats the purpose of an ajdjustable rear sight, especially if the sight plane is kinda off already due to extra height in the sight base. I am probably gonna order 2 of these airsoft rear sight drum with picatinny base.

If you dont mind, i will send you 1 just to see how it can be mounted
