The GSG 16 modification thread

Could someone elaborate on why you are moding the GSG-16? I might be interested but the moded guns don't look any different to me.
What am I missing?

Because we wanted MP5s and the GSG 16 isn't quite there. If they allowed the GSG 5/552 we wouldn't need to mod the GSG 16s. I mean the collapsible stock with the lever on top, the rail on top and the mag holder is stupid. The finger groves on the GSG 16 trigger housing is ugly. The non dioper sights. Just isn't a MP5 w/o.. The quad rail, top rail.. Its just not a Mp5.

To some it's the closest to a MP5 that we can own.

OkayShooter nailed it. I will add that while many of todays shooters in the USA buy clones or genuine HK MP5's and make them more modern by adding rails and such making them similar to the GSG 16. I am like many here an old fart that enjoys the classic lines of the traditional 80's/90's movie version (Die Hard 1 & 2 etc) I have no intention of mounting an optic, lasers, RDS, vertical grips etc. I just want to slap the gun while yelling Yippee Ki Yay M0ther Fvcker.

Cheers

I mean I was a child when they announced the GSG 16 coming out.. I always wanted a MP5, but cannot own one legally. The GSG 16 is best I can get, thats not a airsoft. If I could own any MP5, it would been the SD model. Why I bought a proper stock, the rail delete the SD forearm. Trying to turn it close to a MP5SD.. I'm searching high and low for the non finger groove trigger housing.

Nice jobs fellas! Here's my SBR'ed HK 94 (for reference):

That's a nice gun Mark. Rachel and I were talking the other day about the time we shot that gun at Springfield. I am just glad we can now own a cheap clone of it now. We never thought it would happen. Not in this climate of Canada today.

Do you think you will be able to shoot that again under C-71. Does that not allow movement to and from a range under an ATT and not a SAP like the past?

I liked the election sign pic you got done in your yard. Totally agree. Having my own DVA battles.

Cheers

Ok that looks amazing! Can you please elaborate on where you sourced the handguard and if there was any modding to fit it? This is just what i needed to pull the trigger on a gsg 16, its a shame we cant get the 522. Thanks!

Its an Armson Occluded Eye Gunsight (OEG), straight out of the 1980s. They are a South African design and constitute the very first battery-free reflex optic. Actually, they are 0ne of the first reflex optics, period for that matter. The Armson OEG came out right around the same time as the first Aimpoint sights. The Armsons however feature no electronics to break nor batteries to wear out - both of which were huge problems with the early Aimpoints.
When you look through the Armson OEG tube it is black except for the bright orange dot provided by the plastic light collector on the front of the sight. You have to keep both eyes open, as the dominant eye is looking through the blacked out tube and sees only the orange dot. The non-dominant eye sees normally, and the brain transposes what one eye sees onto the other so that the image you see (after a bit of practice) is very much akin to what you would see looking through a modern red-dot optic.

They system actually works very well, but does take a bit of practice to train the eyes so that the images are immediately transposed. Otherwise, all you see with the dominant eye is a black field with an orange dot... not good. If memory serves, there is also Tritium in the tube for night/low light conditions.

I found this example sitting forlorn and collecting dust in a LGS display case, there not being much call these days for old-school red-dot technology. There is definitely no demand for a sight with a proprietary HK Receiver Mount, so I got it cheap. It is cool, because it is true to the 1980's heyday of the MP5, just not often encountered any longer.

Hey Moe,

I hope that all is well with you and Rachel, my friend! Sadly, I don't see anything in C71 that will provide SAP permits to allow the owners of 12(3, 4, 5) long-guns to take them to the range again. It has now been 12 years since any of my prohib rifles or SMGs discharged a round, and I fear that they never will again. In fact, you and Rachel were probably a few of the last folks to ever fire that MP5 clone of mine, so savour the experience!

There are simply too many variables at play to be able to even begin to predict what will happen and what consequently will and won't be possible in a year's time from now. I dunno. If the Libs carry through on their threat to confiscate all military-style semi-autos, will that include the already prohib but previously grandfathered long-guns like my HK94? If so, they know that I have them and I will be left with little option but to have them deactivated. If the Libs shelve their "assault rifle" ban in order to address instead in the real problems facing this country (eg. Western separation) then who knows? If they persist in prohibiting the Swissarms and CZ 858 by enacting that component of C71, but allow owners to continue to take them to the range, then there is certainly reason to complain about a double standard applied to differing classes of prohibited firearm, which makes little sense. We may obtain a back-door win that way where the 12 (3, 4, 5) firearms are concerned, but I would frankly expect the opposite. Faced with any complaint about a double-standard, I would expect the Libs to instead shut down range privileges for the Swissarms and CZ 858. That's how they operate...

Thanks, that makes sense then. I don't mind the curremt look but would like to swap out the rear stock for a metal folding stock.
Where do you guys get the parts? Is is primarily air-soft guns?

Well the current look was so HK wouldn't go after GSG again, and they can't say well it's just a GSG 522. I got a fixed stock, and a proper collapsible stock waiting for mine, not sure which one ill run, both airsoft. I picked up some parts from Walmart Greeter, to aid in the SD look. Trying hard to get a non finger grooved trigger housing. Seen a conversion kit online, but it was like 100$, and the part I need is like 12USD.

Down the road, I may make a bigger shroud.

Has anyone removed the barrel cover (faux suppressor)? Is it threaded?
Do you just have to loosen the set screw?

Re-read post #15. Dont make us bump you back down to grade 4 elementary school
I just read post #15 and proceeded to twist and pull. Here's the result:

So for anyone else who wants to take off the shroud... DO NOT twist and pull before releasing the set screw!

Hero outdoors. They can and are willing to bring in the mp5 lower from ics. They are estimating 2 months wait and approx 50$.

As far as stock goes, the collapsible stock is bearable to shoot in a .22lr caliber. Completely horrible in a center fire setup. 1 of the reason why i kept the fixed stock on my nork nr08

####. They actually tighte dow your set screw. Mine was loose that it was a pull and it came out. Then i noticed the set screw and tighten it on reassembly.

Also disclaimer then, since we have people here that are not mechanically inclined.

The charging handle does not just pull out like an acr. You have to remove the top rail, undo the screw then it pulls out.
Also, do not disassemble the trigger housing if you have no idea what you are doing. It consists of quite a few springs that will launch into orbit. Do that at your own risk.

If you do disassembled, make sure your trigger return spring is there on the left side, and your mag disconnect on the right side.

Very authentic for the period. Where did you get the MP5 barrel? I'd love to follow suit.

It was an awfully long time ago, long before ITAR made life difficult. I believe my barrel came from HKParts.net back in the day. Nowadays you would have to arrange import through a 3rd-Party Importation company, which will jack up the cost considerably...

Yes you can, just pull and twisting in same time,it is not threaded but sit firmly with an oring.

Danfizz and sky52. Thanks for the advice. I just did the same damage. So for those doing this and have poor vision as I do. Remove the set screw first which uses the same Allen key for front sight change and came with the gun.
