The GSG 16 modification thread

FYI if you modify your GSG and it needs to get it fixed. You are looking at a 115$ out-of-warranty rate. I just got dinged with that with my second GSG.

Personally I don't think the trigger is that bad.

That's almost cute. I mean... warranties haven't meant much to me since... ever. The only warranties I've ever made use of were for a Casio EG-800 Pocket PC which just kept failing miserably back in 2001, replaced 4 times in 9 months due to manufacturing errors, and a couple of Davek umbrellas, a company which claims to make the world's best umbrella, but in fact has more failures than any other umbrella I've ever owned... but at least they seem to stand by their warranty so far with 3 replacements in 2 years. Generally I modify everything so much that warranties don't apply, so I recycle the paperwork. And factory service is usually worse than anything I'll do to repair something anyway. But again, to each his own. It'll be a frosty day in July that I pay $115 for warranty service on a cheap rifle.

I had a pack of 20 stainless steel 1" long bolts arrive on Friday and went through the gun replacing one at a time, re-drilling then tapping every screw hole for a #6-32 bolt, chopping the bolts to the correct length for each location and rounding over the cut ends, counter-sinking the plastic for some and not others depending on what worked for each spot. The result is much more confident assembly of the GSG-16, the deep Allen socket in these higher quality bolts holding securely, not trying to strip out like the mushy native stuff which I happily tossed in the trash once the job was done.

Has anyone tried using an airsoft all metal housing to replace the plastic housing of the GSG?

I read that they molded the GSG from an airsoft mp5, so maybe there could be a possibility that a metal housing could work.

Just read that GSG used to sell the GSG522 in a metal housing style as well so they are out there.

The airsoft mp5 lacks the bolt stop slot. Unless you want a bolt carrier where your right eye is....

That's what shooting glasses are for.. :)

I was just curious more than anything so I ordered a G&G metal airsoft housing. Very well built solid piece of aluminum! Items definitely cross over but as others have said, the inside is totally different to the GSG16. I'll take some close up photos to show the housing with lower and mag. I'm thinking for $35.00 cdn, I might cut it up to use partially on the GSG (definitely not to replace the receiver) for decorative stuff like the mag area that looks and feels so much more authentic than the GSG.

I believe way back in this thread someone filled away the outside plastic and what's underneath is alot like the MP5 mag well

Here is the photos of the G&G metal airsoft housing. As you can see the GSG 522 trigger housing fits fine as does a CYMA MP5 fixed stock. Mags for the GSG16 are a little tight but still fit fine as the GSG Mags actually lose their curve and are pretty straight where they connect to the receiver while MP5 mags continue the curvature throughout the length of the mag. I love the mag housing in that it is metal and is much closer to the original design. Mag release looks to be identical between the 2 housings (G&G and GSG)

For some reason the paint on the G&G is gunmetal just like the 522 GSG trigger housing or any of the plastic from the GSG16.

What parts are you planning on using?

I think you are right when looking at the inside of the magwell for the GSG16. You can still see the casting imprint for the raised portion behind the 3 point sling attachment used on the GSG522. Sadly whatever was there originally is now part of a big chunk of GSG16 reinforced plastic

I don't know if there is anything I can use. I would love to have the metal mag housing and mag release portion grafted to the GSG16 but it would need to be completely rigid and seamless. Far too much fabrication and risk. It might be easier with a sheetmetal housing instead of a magnesium housing like the one I bought but not sure if I want to take such a chance screwing something up.

Well considering the serial # is on the magwell of the GSG ( which is part of the receiver ).. Removing it would be illegal.

Correct. I'd think if one checked the airsoft magazine and GSG magazine attach differently specifically to prevent this kind of thing

Yes don't remove the the serial number. I was referring to the left side with the 3 point sling attachment and the wider metal baseplate. Airsoft mags and GSG 22 mags are interchangeable and both fit either housing assemblies. I think they made the original gsg522 based off of an airsoft MP5

So, the final piece for my GSG-16 arrived from Taiwan on Friday. This is ICS MP5 airsoft lower piece that was apparently sold out everywhere in North America. I contacted ICS directly and had them air mail it here. With some instructions online and few hours of work using dremel and other various tools I was able to attach it to my GSG-16 without any issues.
This project is finally complete. All mods combined probably ended up costing x2 or x3 price of this rifle, but hey its all part of the fun!

And the final result...

Hello shurick,
Very nice GSG! The trigger housing looks great and works well with the GSG safety switch.

I went with the SEF housing but still need to swap out the original safety with the matching SEF safety to make it look right. The SEF housing trigger is very comfortable IF you are a right handed shooter, not so good for lefties lol.

Here is a few photos of mine (still a work in progress)

Thorsbear, that looks excellent sir!

ICS used to make a similar lower part MP-46 but they are out of production now. The only one left is the MP-42 that I got from them.

What magazine is that you are using? Is that a functioning piece or display only? I coudnt find any aftermarket mags for GSG-16
