The hippies are after cougar hunting in BC

"Also, most British Columbians are opposed to hunting animals except for sustenance"

f:P:

That statement, which is likely true and that attitude, will do more to end hunting than the granola eating rain forest, "spirit bear," hippies can ever do.
If hunters don't have the intestinal fortitude to stand up and say they hunt for pleasure, relaxation, adventure and the joy of being out with nature, while bringing home some meat or trophies as a bonus, hunters are in trouble.

Quoted for undeniable truth.

Provincial figures show an average of 257 cougars are killed each year by hunters and an average of 50 a year are killed because of conflict with humans.

...

dipped from an estimate of 1,200 in 1979 to between 300 and 400 in 2001, according to unpublished provincial figures.

So next year there will be between -7 and 93 cougars left in BC.

:jerkit:

Falling succes rate in cougar hunt indicates decline in population, not hippies whining.

Considering how many species, cougar included, have harvests managed by CPUE data, being 'difficult to count' has nothing to do with it.
I have yet to meet a biologist who has anything positive to say about the Raincoast guys...... :jerkit:

Even though I do not hunt, I have shot many a Cougar...with my camera.

I'm not up to date on how Cougars are hunted but the last time I heard, they are chased around by dogs...cornered or chased up trees, then shot. If this is true, it don't impress me much. Take it on face to face with a good fighting knife and you might start impressing me.

Nothing against guns(love em) or hunters, and not glorifying tree huggers, just my humble opinion.

Taking wildlife photos, that's great and it's your recreational enjoyment.

You choose not to like a hunting sport that uses dogs (man has for untold centuries) and that's your right to.
A knife, pah! Use your bare hands only and strangle it too death like a real man. Now that's impressive. ;)

Oh, I forgot, you don't hunt!! So why does anyone have to impress you?

BTW, it's hunter's cash (including the ones that use monsterous dogs!) that pays for conservation efforts. Therefore allowing non-hunters like yourself to enjoy the free ride of sustainable wildlife populations, so you can take pictures of them.

What does cougar taste like?

Cougar tastes like..... delicious! :D The first time I was offered cougar stew I was staying at a lodge in the Beaverfoot valley of BC. I had grown up on wild game but the thought of eating a carnivore didn't sit well with me. Considering the alternative was salad and a bun, I had a bit, then seconds, then thirds. I don't know what other animal it tastes like, but I don't know anyone who has tried it and didn't like it.

X2. Used to hound hunt in the 70's, and loved it. I laugh at how people make hunting with hound'a sound so easy. And hunters pay, Poachers and hippies do not.

Yeah, it's a pretty easy deal hunting cougars with a pack of dogs. You just get some dogs, no need to train em, feed em, house em, nothing like that. Doesn't matter what kind they are either, or what kind of shape they're in. And let's not get started on how easy it is to follow dogs following a cat over and around mountains. No skill involved in finding and reading tracks either. The worst part of hound hunting is listening to the pack baying, and feeling your hair stand on end as you hear each of your dogs giving tongue and telling you what's happening, only 30 minutes of hard travel ahead of you.
Yeah, it's a boring pursuit that really involves no skill.
