The Hunter Marksman Challenge - use your hunting rifle!

I have decided to make the sacrifice and do all the positions exactly as Brobee does in his video in the first post. No pain, No gain.
You never know when you are going to be called upon to make an awkward shot, so I may as well experience some awkward.

So that is 9 shots "touching" the target! I won't be able to equal that with my best SKS, but I will try real hard!:d

There are 6 on the 6" red circle, 12'oclock is clearly within 8" so that makes 7. The 2 O'clock hit I don't think I can claim is in the 8" diameter. Close but no cigar. Then there is one top left and one hole cut the very top of the paper.

My bad. My vision is so bad I thought that there were more holes than there really were.

I may have to give this a go........I've never played along with any of these challenges, but seeing as it is going to benefit your education I may just have to make up some circles and give it a go.........start at .204 and finish with .470 NE...........the 50 is to heavy for any offhand shooting...........
I only have one question.........what do you consider sitting supported as opposed to sitting unsupported........is sitting supported as in off the bench with bags? And unsupported meaning no artificial support but elbows on knees OK?
Does time include moving from one position into the next? OK that's more than one question but.........................

Would really appreciate your participation!

How I think about sitting supported and sitting unsupported:

Sitting supported - the rifle can rest on something other than your body, i.e. rock, log, fencepost, picnic table, bench...imagine you are out hunting and you have an opportunity where you can sit down and rest the rifle off some part of your environment.

Sitting unsupported - the rifle can be supported by your arms which are resting on your knees...imagine you are out hunting and the terrain is such that you can sit however there is nothing to rest your rifle on.

Excited to see the spread across the calibers you mention above!

Thanks a tonne,

Brobee

Can't wait! But if you have variations of the positions I use and they remain within the spirit of the challenge I'm all game to hear about them!

Cheers, and thanks.

How about shooting 45° behind you while leaning out of a chair and scoping yourself? I tried that position this fall. It's not my favorite.

The shotgun version definitely needs to have a 'shooting backwards over your right shoulder at an escaping goose from your back in a swampy laydown blind' position.

Got it now..........I shot a hippo while sitting, (me sitting not him) and using the leg of a shooting tripod as though it were a limb or tree........popped him right behind the ear at about 120 mtrs, worked flawlessly.

That sounds suspiciously like the first time I ever had ###, except the part about the ear.

Was that with a hippo, and what part did the shooting sticks play..............I'm confused, I just can't seem to get a mental picture of such an event..........probably just as well.........

It got a little confused. I recall alcohol was a factor. I'm also like 70% sure she wasn't a "him", too.

Tried the challenge today twice with my Savage 116 223rem. 3/9 scope set at 9 power.I used a 25yd. pistol target with a bull which is 3 3/4'' in diameter. I used some shooting sticks for the sitting supported. First try I got 8 hits and took 147.9 sec. for a score of 5.4. Second run I got 10 hits 9 inside the 3 3/4''bull and took 150 sec. score 6.6 .So I am going to print off some 8'' bull,s and pick up the speed hope to shoot this a few times this week.

Sounds like some impressive accuracy results..... Can't wait to see your 8 inch target....

Hi Folks!

So the forecast for this morning said 7 degrees and I though "what a great opportunity to go try out my new CZ!" I packed everything into my car and headed out. What I was not counting on was 60-80km/hr winds, but I figured I'd try anyway.

Well...the wind was BRUTAL...like hurricane-chinook-on-off-super-gust brutal. The temperature was hovering around 1 degree and I was kinda underdressed, but I figured I'd maple-leaf-up and have a go anyway. HOLY SCHMOLY is it hard to shoot standing in those kind of condition! Also, I forgot my chopping block (rest for sitting supported), so I fired 3 from kneeling and 3 from sitting unsupported.

While I was pretty happy with my 9 hits, my time was brutal - 148 seconds. I spent a TONNE of time on the two standing shots, and it was certainly my second one that missed. The wind was blowing me all over the place and I had to disrupt my cadence a couple of times to breath. In the end I just wound up pulling the trigger while the rifle was swirling around and my scope reticle was passing through the target. It felt cr*ppy and I did not need to walk downrange to know I'd missed.

The kneeling/sitting/prone went pretty good, but my reload was pretty awkward and slow as my fingers were really cold.

I think I could shave at least 20 to 30 seconds off my time, and am excited to get out and try again when the weather conditions are a bit less severe. I'm also curious to see if the combination of being left-handed (reach across to work bolt) and the hinged-floorplate-reload make for a rig that is ultimately slower than my single shot ruger no.1....:)

+1 to superbrads comment - can't wait to see how you do on an 8 inch bull at 100!
