I do not get them all very often but I have it done enough to keep me working at it.I call it the Steward Edward White drill inspired by the book THE ART OF THE RIFLE by Jeff Cooper.

Many thanks for your additional three runs. I also found it hard to load the blind box magazine mid-string and my time suffered horribly too. I wonder how much faster a guy could get at that? Anyway, I smile as I continually catch myself trying to go faster which causes me to miss. I wish I had the discipline and focus to just ignore time and set myself the goal of "however long it takes to run it clean".

I think your goal of 60 secs 10/10 with gun that has a detachable magazine is totally achievable, and would reflect a high level of competence. I don't want to turn the challenge into an arms race where gear is king, so if I can get enough results I'll split the data into different classes based on gun type and as such really appreciate your blind box runs above!

Your drill sounds very good too...something I'm sure to practice this coming summer!

Cheers, and thanks again!

Since I'm still at sea and can't shoot yet, I'll just say that you have a very fine looking rifle/scope combination there Brobee!

Safe travels! Hope you make it back soon to help me fill up my database by shooting the Hunter Marksman Challenge. While recognizing that hot guns are kinda like hot girls (lots of different ideas out there), I'm kinda with you that she is a looker.

Cheers,

Brobee

Very nice rifle and scope "Brobee",...I'd like to have that one standing in my cabinet,...very good shooting too, especially in the weather conditions.

I think it's a pretty nice rifle too! It's my first foray into the CZ550 world.

When I was a little kid, my prized possession was a Red Ryder lever action BB gun. Every summer my mom and dad would pile all the kids into the back of a suburban and well would head out to a lakeside cottage in Saskatchewan where we would spend the summer. I remember spending countless hours in the woods along the shoreline where I'd set up a little range à-la Hickok45 style with all kinds of cans and plastic pipe suspended from string. I can still remember the feeling of gun's compression as you worked the lever, the sound it made as it fired, and the snappy !schwack! the bb would make as it hit one of the PVC pipe swingers.

But being the gun-nut ambitious little bugger I was, what I wanted more than anything in the world was a real gun. So imagine the thrill that came one year on my birthday when my dad presented me with my first real gun - a BRNO model 2-E (which as far as I can tell is the same gun as the CZ 452). It was a fabulous gun, but as a brainless teenager I traded it away so I could get a 10/22 which I had for the remainder of my childhood.

Then one day in the gunshop I was handling the then-new CZ527 in 7.62x39 and a wave of nostalgia swept over me. I bought the gun (as well as a couple of 452s), and played with it for a couple years. I took it hunting for European Wild Boar, but eventually sold it because I lost interest in the caliber.

This year I'd been playing with a Ruger No.1 in 30-06 and was looking at getting a repeater in the same caliber to play with too. I had really wanted a Winchester Model 70 Alaskan in 30-06, but while searching a crafty sales lady put the 550 Ebony in my hands. That wave of nostalgia washed over me again as I was smitten hard. I had her out again yesterday to try out some handloads and was pretty happy with the result:

The regular trigger on it not that great, however the set trigger is so amazing that I'm scared to monkey with the adjustment screws. It's my first rifle with controlled-round-feed, and while I'd kinda like to be able to single-feed without worrying about breaking the extractor claw, cycling from the magazine has a super-solid and very smooth feel to it. The scope is super-nice...the nicest I've ever had I think, and when paired with the rifle they seem to fit very well together. The balance is phenomenal, and I find it very stable from pretty much all of the shooting positions I use regularly. Overall it fits me pretty well too.

Anyway, I think I like it enough that I'm going to commit to it this summer for practice and see if we can get along well enough to have a 2016 hunting relationship...:)

Cheers, and I hope you can find the time to shoot The Challenge and share your results for my project!

Right on Brobee,..that's one pretty rifle.

Yup, I think I will give the challenge a go when I get a chance, I just got to decide which rifle to use,....I was planing on going to the range sometime this week and give it a go as we have had spring like conditions and bare ground for the past few days, but we are about to get a Northeast blizzard blowing through here today and tomorrow with 30+cm, so that will keep me busy working for most of this week, and then I go back on day shift for the next 2 weeks,..but hopefully I'll get out for a few shots in March.

Tagged in case I get a chance in the near future to try this out. Is there a deadline for your results?

Would be great to add a run or two from you into my data set! Sooner is better, but I'm going to leave the challenge open for the summer as I have a deep personal interest as well.

Cheers,

Brobee

OK, after another unsuccessful and cold coyote hunt, I gave this another go with my .223..... Same barn with target stapled to the broad side for hit assurance..... yardage once again taken using my GPS.....

I loaded up the first 6 shots and had 4 rounds handy in my otherwise empty jacket pocket... I removed both of my gloves to make handling easier and had my monopod set to the right height, ready to go.... Actually leaned it up against a nearby branch this time hoping to be a bit faster... turns out, it wouldn't really matter.... lol

Took the first standing shot and racked the bolt, felt good about the shot took the second shot and it went well too.... dropped down to kneeling (Always liked firing from kneeling , so no issues here).... two more shots taken.... Now is where it gets ugly.....

I had decided before hand that the moment after completing the kneeling position would be the best time to reload back up to 6, rather than waiting to run out and try and reload while sitting.... So, at this point in the challenge I have 2 rounds left in the mag and an empty in the chamber.... I cycled the bolt back to remove the empty casing and begin to reload.... a couple of observations at this point... .223 rounds floating around in a big pocket are hard to find with frozen hands..... Also, any thoughts of short cuts you had in mind before the challenge (such as orienting the rounds in the same direction so they come out together and are aligned and ready to be loaded), go out the window when you are aggressive in making the move from standing to kneeling.... SO I began fumbling shells out of my pocket one by one and loading them.....

I proceeded to put three in the staggered mag and get them all good to go and reach into my pocket and cant find the fourth.... I looked down and found that it had hit the ice covered snow and rolled up against my knee, so I grab that round and chamber it..... As I pushed down on the top round in the mag to get the bolt face over top of it so that it could line up on the chambered round, I bottomed out the cases in the mag from being too aggressive and it turns out that my hinge plate was not fully engaged (maybe I hit the drop button partially during the reload?).... So, you guessed it... out comes all of my rounds.... and to add just a bit of insult to injury, when I leaned over to pick one up and start the reload process, the chambered round fell out too..... So, with frozen hands I made a little ammo pile and got my hinge plate back in place and went through the reloading process again....

I took my sweet time on the last 6 shots but still had trouble shooting from sitting unsupported.... As Brobee mentioned earlier, I was shooting as the crosshairs were somewhat sweeping the target, but I got lucky.....

Anywho, ten hits *cough* 187 seconds......

Now is where it gets ugly.....

I can totally relate to that...I've dropped many many many rounds in the snow while hunting/reloading with my single shot, so many that my standard procedure now is to carry extra rounds in my pocket above what I think I might need. I've been doing this for my challenge entries too...and confess that I've fumbled a couple of times where I've dropped stuff in the snow. With extra rounds in my pocket I just ignore the snow covered ones and keep going...:)

Amazed you found all your rounds with that much snow on the ground, and also amazed they all fed ok covered in ice and snow!

Cheers, and thanks again! Hope you get out again for a clean run...:)

edited to add: I've decided I'm going to adapt some sort of fractional exponent of the time as the divisor. It will encourage precision over time, and it's awesome that Superbrad knuckled down to pound out a clean target even as the SHTF with all his manipulations....bravo!

Sounds like fun, i'll give it a go hopefully this weekend. I'd love to try out my CZ 550 on this challenge in.375, but perhaps i'll start with something a bit smaller (.223) in order to build some confidence before the iron sights and old eyes on the CZ have to strain out to a 100!

Thanks... that is actually an older picture of my rifle.... I hope to not be taking the test with this rifle again as it is up on the EE.... lol (nothing to do with this test, I just prefer Rugers and see getting out with the .243 more often)

We had a January thaw followed by ice rain, so there is only about 3 inches of ice covered snow.... You can literally walk across the top of it... The rounds stayed clean but they slid all over the place...

I had extra rounds on me, in case I used any during the hunt, but wanted to avoid having to drop any I didn't need on the ground or waste time putting them back in my pocket..... Neat how this challenge makes you think things out in advance!

I will be taking the test with the .243 shortly... will be sighting it in this weekend.... and hope to actually take a video as well...

Superbrad, you know you can put your elbows on your knees for sitting unsupported? It should be quite a bit more stable than kneeling.

I have always had issues with it..... part of it is my proportions, I am 6' tall, but have a 30 inch inseam, so I am always hunched over to get my elbows to meet my knees, which doesn't make for a good line of sight through the scope.... Also makes it hard to shoot at a target that is higher than you are....

I have the opposite problem. I'm 6'2" and have a 38" inseam. My elbows don't even reach my knees unless I sit cross legged.
