The Hunter Marksman Challenge - use your hunting rifle!

Here's what I use for basement dry-fire practice:

15 yard basement practice dots

When set up at 15 yards, the number in each circle corresponds to the equivalent diameter of a disc at 100 yards.

Cheers,

B

Cool!.... I don't typically dry fire my hunting rifles, but do this with my handguns with a cheap laser pointer so I can see the jump at trigger pull.... I should try this!

Can we get a sitting bear*?

Thanks for putting on the challenge.

I really like how you cannot see the outline of the "kill zone" at 25 meters on the targets but it is still there to check up on.

* and a t-rex, and a charging cape buffalo, and and and....

Ha! I plan on drawing up all of those critters and more. Might take me a bit as time is kinda precious right now.

Thanks for participating!

I have a mountain of snap-caps and practice basement dry-fire ALOT, but only with my centerfires rifles (no rimfire).

Here's some to get you going:

20cm bull reference target
Black Bear BB001
Bull Moose BM001
Elk Pair EP001
Mule Deer Buck MD001
Whitetail Buck WT001
Whitetail Doe WT002
Whitetail Pair WT003

I've got lots more I'm working on (sheep, wild boar, grizzly, roe deer, european red deer, caribou, small game, hell, I'm even open to sketching up a series on dinosaurs); hope to have a whole library of targets done up by the time I'm done along with a manual/curriculum you can use to practice positional shooting (both with centerfire and rimfire) and measure your improvement.

Once I get the baseline challenge out of the way and hopefully hook a bunch of folks, I'll start posting practice exercises/perscriptions for everyone to try.

Cheers,

Brobee

When it gets to summertime we should post 4 targets per month and keep the challenges going. I will certainly do this challenge once the days get longer, pretty tough when the days are so short.

I have a mountian of 1 gallon water jugs in my shed. They are Aprox 8"wide and 12" tall.

That's what I train with. We fill them with water and go place them all over a hill side.

Usialy ranging from 50-300yrds.

Takes a lot to set up. But everyone loves the explosive water jug.
Clean up is easy as the jugs stay in one piece

I find the size is a good repsentation of a kill zone

We try standing kneeling and leaning on what ever is in the area.

Only way I could keep the girlfriend intrested.
She got board with outing holes in paper pretty fast.

Ok, so I went out and did the challenge. I definitely need more practice - particularly from the standing position, my reticle was all over the place. In fact, I think I got worse as I shot more lol.

Please note that I modified the target slightly so I wouldn't have to use a lot of black ink. Also, I shot shot 4 rounds from sitting unsupported as I didn't have a suitable support available. Here's the results:

Attempt 1: 8 hits, 45.9 seconds
Attempt 2: 6 hits, 53.5 seconds
Attempt 3: 9 hits, 89.5 seconds

Here's the targets:

Finally, some video of my first attempt:

So, what do you guys think?

Wow, when you did miss it wasn't by much!... No shooting coach here, but proper use of a sling (see brobee's vid) will make standing ####s much easier..... How did you do sitting supported?..... I didn't notice a support....

A couple of quick adjustments and you will be getting ten hits I bet..... You were really doing a good job of moving between positions....

Didn't have a support so I just shot 4 rounds unsupported. I didn't seem to have too much trouble with the position itself but I did have a bit of trouble because I was shooting on a small slope. I'd like to try it again in a better spot (flat, level ground) as I had to work around other range users. As for the sling, I slung up on my subsequent attempts.

SWEET! Many thanks for your three runs, I've put them all into my data set.

What do I think? I think you run the bolt on your T3 amazingly well, and your positional shooting looks pretty good to me too. I loved watching your video, and seeing how little your rifle kicked made me lust for another 6.5 x something...:) That detachable magazine sure makes a difference too.

I like what you did with the targets to reduce ink consumption, and was wondering where you got the big fluorescent sticker to put in the middle?

Thanks again for helping me with my project. Hope you're having fun!

Cheers,

Brobee

I buy those sticky targets (Lyman TargetDots - http://www.targdots.com/home/stick-on-targdots.php) at Wholesale whenever I can find them. As for the reduced ink target, I can post it if you'd like.

I made an 8 inch circle stencil, and spray painted it. Cardboard is good for a couple of uses, milk jug plastic or poster board would work better. Regulation IFSC targets for all.

Out of curiosity Brobee, where did you hunt that boar?

If you'd like to post the no-ink target that would be great! I do all my drawing in illustrator so could easily re-create it too, but was not that worried about low ink so I went full-on-black..:) I liked the big sticky dot though, will go have a look for those as they sure seem visible and would seem to make spotting hits really easy.

That's a good story! In essence, just west of Glennifer Lake (here in Alberta) where my wife and I have a recreational quarter section, one of my neighbours has a couple of thick bush/swamp quarters that he's fenced off big time and "farms" European Wild Boar. He does guided "hunts" with his boars, but was away and unavailable to take me. I convinced him to let me jump over the fence and "hunt" one of his boars on my own to bring back to our Calgary house for a neighbourhood pig roast block party my wife had organized. I figured it would be a 10 minute harvest kind of deal, but as soon as I jumped the fence they all went into ultra-houdini-mode and I actually had to "hunt". I had a lot of fun doing it and have been thinking about sometime this summer lining up some buddies and doing it again for a sausage adventure weekend.

Wow..... My iPhone dropped all the way to the bottom of the page when I loaded it and the first thing my eyes picked up was "sausage adventure weekend"..... Was not sure I wanted to scroll up and read the rest..... :)

Sorry to hijack, I ate the last of my boar last week, was wondering how they taste on a spit?....

Wouldn't mind trying your buddy's outfit.... There is one nearby me, and it is a complete joke....

Good to know that it was not feral.

Even some breeds of domesticated pigs are sneaky like that, I had an incident with mangalica once.

I saw a guy from NW AB on fbook bragging about his population of "san diego zoo" bloodline siberian boars with no domestic tendencies. That just sounds like a bad idea.

Laughing.

The one we had was pretty good, although still a bit tough even after roasting from 8:30am to 10:00pm. My original plan was to find a juvenile to execute and bring home, but as it turned out I actually had to hunt them and was getting kinda anxious after I blew a couple of opportunities and the day was getting late. With daylight coming to an end and the wife waiting at home for me to arrive with the bacon, I went into "the-next-one-I-see" mode and it wound up being a reasonably large boar. I suspect a younger one would have been even more tasty - one of there reasons I want to go back and try again!

I'm pretty sure this population also stems from the "san diego zoo"s bloodline siberian boars. My experience left me with the impression that if they ever did get out, they would be really, really hard to round back up.

Talk about playing with fire. Soon we will be able to fish for carp and hunt boars in Central Alberta just like in Mother Russia.

Better make some wild boar targets Brobee.
