The inbound Garands are NOT Korean, they're GREEK!

Because the gun employs an enbloc clip to load and fire, it cannot be easily converted to five rounds and was given an exemption from the five round rule. Hit up Youtube for some loading and firing videos, it'll all make sense once you see it in action. PING!

Actually, it is easily converted to 5 round use. You just have to have the right clip!
And even better yet, they make so many of these clips they are actually selling them.

When the laws were writen the enblocs were 99% 8 rounders.
And most 5 shot enblocks did not work.
Well that is what I have been told.

Huh, gotta say I've never seen one of those! 5 round to be in compliance with the hunting regs in some locales perhaps? Anyway, I'm still glad the 8's are allowed and I hope to get one of these mythical beasts if they do show up on our shores.

Well, that's about the most horrible thing I've seen.

That's exactly right, only exists because of jurisdictions that allow no more than 5 rounds in mag while hunting. It's way more fun with 8 of course :)

As someone who owns no milsurp rifles, may I know what's the appeal of these? I'm not averse to buying one, but why?

Are they more accurate than an SKS?
Is their ammo easier to find or cheaper (.30, right?)
Just the history behind them?
Not wanting to turn this into a cheap gun vs a $$$ one, poor proletariat vs rich capitalist, or East vs West argument, but having owned both the SKS and Garand going back over 20 years, the M1 Garand is head and shoulders above the SKS in accuracy, build, look, power, feel, fit and finish. Don't get me wrong, an SKS provides lots of fun at a reasonable cost, with a bit less recoil, but I'd pick the M1 over the Siminov in every department. Even if I was on a budget, I'd still pick the Garand and just shoot less, I guess! Both rifles are historically important, but the Garand has had a much greater international role from the entry of the US in WW2 (both theaters) to Korea and even some service in Vietnam [the SKS was there too, but in nowhere near the Garand's numbers]. There will never be as many M1s in Canada as there are SKSs, and the prices reflect that. Shoot both (short range and long), field strip both, check 'em both out and I'm sure the Garand will win you over. Just don't get your thumb caught in its action! Ouch!

If the SKS was in the first Call of Duty, I bet you they would be worth more. Wish I had bought an M1 when they were south of $250. As I recall at that time the chinese SKS wasclose to the same price or maybe even a little more?-not sure about that though..

No, they have great modern kit. They don't need 70 yr old m1 rifles any longer. Most recently they used them as beaters in basic training I've heard.

Seems those "obsolete Garands" are enjoying a new lease on life recently (albeit as the M14) after it was suddenly "discovered" that .223" ain't all it was cracked up to be, and isn't much at all after 600m or so.

I'm sure the Koreans could manage a nice refurb and conversion program.

As for the prices, they've seen what Garands are selling for here and figure they should get 40-50% of that; at least as their initial bargaining position.

Awesome news. Can someone fill me in on where this news first came in? Also how long before/where I can get one!?
