The JR Carbine Thread

Has anyone thought about a charging handle mod? That is one of my only dislikes about this gun. I would like a bigger or longer one, was very surprised looking through all the posts there were none.

What y'all using for optics on your JRCs?
I have options.
-I have an AR carry handle with front tower site. Dual apertures on the handle. Both seem awful big. I have no peep sight experience though.
-I can put one of those cheap 4x32 "prismatic" scopes with illuminated rgb reticles and the fiber optic irons way up on top.
-I can put a cheapo reflex little red dot sight on it.
-I can put a 1X40 red dot sight on it.
-I can..well I will anyway no matter which of the others I go with...put a green laser on it.
I have all of these sighting options right in front of me now so it isn't like I have to buy one and stick with it.

What will I be using the carbine for? Well it isn't a long range competition shooter and it isn't for hunting. So just plinking and messing about with.
I like the prismatic scope but not the best for fast close range acquisition. But with the laser on it...that might take care of the close stuff...and it has the open sights about 3" above the bore.

I have one of the 1X40s on my sks. Kinda all I can put on it cause of the infinite eye relief and due to the fact that I have a tapco stock on it and the only place I can mount anything is on the foregrip. It actually holds really well. There really is no BEST mounting option on an SKS as far as I'm concerned. The goodest is probably the full rail but then no more stripper clips. IDK.

The little holographic reflex red dot sight is a cheapo. Works great and everything but it sure looks fragile.
Lay the gun down wrong or have it slide and fall over and for SURE it would land directly on that little optic.

I want to narrow it down as much as I can cause I have to sell the ones I don't pick pretty soon.

So? What are you all rockin on your JRCs?

I LOVE the look of the carry handle.
I might see if the stupid little delicate reflex sight will co-witness the carry handle sights. If so that is how I'm going.

Oh and the laser...I have a vertical grip on the way...2 of them actually. One with a bipod in it and the other without.
One will stay and go on the JRC and will get the laser's pressure switch.

Most likely because the JR is firing with a non locking bolt, wich means bolt weight and spring weight are calculated to the recoil momentum of the ammo she's built for...your oversized handle would have to have the same weight as the original one,or you have to mess with the spring rate, too.

fair enough...thanks for the input

If you do get a replacement make sure you trim it to the right length, i swapped mine out with one slightly to long and caused my firing pin to stick forward after the first shot and fire the 9 remaining in one quick burst, scared the bejesus outta me.

Sweet ! lol

You could just take the stock one down to a decent machine shop and let them know what you want. They'll whip something-up for you for peanuts.

You don't have to worry about the added few grams it's gonna put on. If they were that sensitive just changing ammo would cause all kinds of issues...which it doesn't...anymore.
I mean of course the weight of the action will have an effect on the action..lol One of the improvements they made was to slow the action down by tweaking the buffer and spring weights. Like was said...weight will change things but a few grams wont. If anything it might make the JRC run even better?
I'm adding a second charging handle to mine. DOUBLE the charging handle weight!! :-O
Not so that I can grip it better...just cause I like the dual bolt alignment the second charging handle will give this thing. Unnecessary? Probably. Peace of mind? YES.

I'll post some pics of my zombie seeking "aimers" later today if I get a chance.

Originally had a Vortex Strikefire, then switched to a 1-4x20IR scope, and now just installed a new Aimpoint PRO on it. Reason I went back to a red dot is to just minimize the weight of the whole rifle...plus the battery life and ability of the Aimpoint to remain on the whole time is pretty cool.

I don't get it?
I haven't taken my bcg out yet but...so are you saying that the threaded charging handle hole goes all the way through and intersects the firing pin channel? And that your firing pin was then held held forward by the overlength charging handle??
If so...that seems so wrong in so many ways.

As most of us know, the early JRCs had some growing pain issues. Most were remedied but I saw one guy's yt vid where he showed how the firing pins were free floating but not only that, they were shorter than the bolt. Only inertia caused the firing pin to continue it's forward travel and slam into the primer.
That's one thing but if the charging handle holes go right into/penetrate the firing pin channel...well unless you have something threaded into the "other" charging handle hole...couldn't a bunch of gunk get in there and do essentially the same thing as what happened with the overlength charging handle threaded section?

Man, there is a lot to love about the JRCs but there is still some stuff they should fix before it's TOO late.
Now I'm EXTRA glad I have a second charging handle on the way. It's REALLY gonna be multitasking now. Dual charging handles so I can use either hand (I'm leftie though), the extra acts as another BCG "guide", and now, keeps the firing pin channel sealed and clean.

They fixed a lot of issues (including common light primer strikes) by installing heavier buffers and buffer springs. That's awesome but now they really should tend to the firing pin (and takedown pins/screws...that's ALL!!) and install at least a longer one...if not spring loaded AND longer. That probably would have addressed a lot of the early version issues in itself. They fixed things "properly" where other companies may have just said...hmmm..we just need to install longer firing pins! Cheap cheap!!
So now just IMAGINE how incredibly reliable the JRCs would be if they had longer (and spring loaded) firing pins!!
Maybe springs are unnecessary? Longer sure would be nice though?

If they refuse to "fix" the pins or say that to do so would raise the end price,....I know there aren't as many JRC owners as SKS owners but maybe companies like Murray's will start offering JRC firing pin upgrade kits.
Might be pretty unnecessary(springs). They haven't been packed in cosmoline for 50 or 70 years like the SKSs have.

The only time I had the firing pin stick out when it wasn't supposed to was one of the first times that I reassembled the BCG and had accidentally flipped the retainer that holds the back end of the firing pin. Went to close the bolt and...BOOM! Scared the crap out of me and I was sure glad I had the rifle pointed in a safe direction. Will never do that again...

Easy mistake to make. Here is the JRC components from the manual:

Anyone know where to buy replacement castle nuts and a castle nut tool? Mine are marked up from not using the right tool.

Yeah. It sure would be nice if they shipped with them. I cant break mine loose and I've been hammering on it with a plastic drift.
:-(
They're on for $22 at JRC but $14S&H ..in USD so it's gonna be nearly fifty bucks once it gets here :-(
