The King Of Trap Guns

Vera Holdsworth and Susan Nattrass I assume are the namesakes behind the annual Holdsworth - Nattrass ATA shoot held each May at AHEIA?
I have been a member of the AHEIA club and its predecessor, Calgary Gun Club, for many, many years. Vera was a member for many years---she was a colorful gal and an incredible shooter. Susan's father, Floyd, was an Olympic trap shooter, and Susan followed in his shoes. Floyd was a member of the Calgary gun club for years. Don't think Susan was ever a member but she has shot there many times. I recall that you met her there at the Canadian Trap Championships a few years back.

I took my original PAL/RPAL test from Floyd about a million years ago. Shot trap casually at his place and ended up painting his barn. He wanted to pay me with a shotgun. Probably should have taken it?

I remember a Susan N gun for sale had her name engraved on it but I think it was a browning? the fog of time distorts some of those memories ...as for the Model 12 being the king I believe affordability and literally bang for your buck led to them being seen in large numbers at most shoots back in the day.

Got my first PAL from Floyd in that same barn in the same millenium, I didn't have to paint the barn though. That was in a time when you could just challenge the test! I asked him about doing an RPAL and he just snorted that he had no use for pistols.

Funny, I grew up shooting pistols in modern pentathlon so needed an RPAL, the only dude who failed that day was a mall ninja that asked Floyd if he could dive and roll at the range because that's how you fought with a pistol.

I came here expecting to read about Winchester Model 12 trap models. Who knew?

I'd be more inclined(and I'm a model 12 fan of many years) to call the model 12 the Prince of trap. They were labelled "The Perfect Repeater" for many years and with good reason. Hard to beat their smooth action, handling characteristics and good looks! IMG_3837.jpeg

Lol.... I got my PAL real early in the program and Floyd wasn't keen on them at that time but maybe he soon realized that he may as well do RPAL's as well.
I had to go to AHEIA to get my RPAL done.

It wasn't real hard to pass his test but I can see where dive and roll would probably turn him off!

The one thing Spank (and I agree on the "Prince" moniker) I will say is Model 12 triggers in my experience are very consistent which lends itself to reliability which we know everybody seeks. My Beretta 680 ,Ljutic mono and my 61 model 12 all had great triggers as does my F3 Blaser .Makes me have to find other excuses when I miss hope I get to try a Knick one day..:)

If you are anywhere near Calgary that can be arranged. CB and I have been organizing a get together for a group of us to shoot our vintage guns. We'll post dates once we have something concrete nailed down. Or if you are going to be at Canadians this month in Edmonton you can try one of my 4E's there. I will have them with me. I've spoken with a delegate from the CTA and they are all for having a Nostalgia event at Canadians modeled after the Nostalgia event held at The Grand each year as long as the host club is willing to hold it.
