I have seventeen 1911's and one double barrel AF2011. All are disassembled regularly and not one has an idiot scratch on it.

Would you you buy a used car from a DIY mechanic that cross threaded all his lug nuts? (Putting lug nuts on correctly is akin to taking down and putting together a 1911 correctly). You would (rightfully so) ask yourself what else he ####ed up on the car

If you want to draw a car analogy, it's more like a scratch on the door from not inserting the key properly. The 1911 is a simple system. Easy to inspect for condition. You may call it an "idiot scratch" but it's still just a scratch.
 
Worn bluing, round count, and holster wear would be more of an issue to me when buying a 1911. A small scratch wouldn't bother me too much, especially on a shooter.

In that scenario, it would be a key scratch equating to a scratch on the magwell for not inserting the mag correctly. Both things are done during routine operation, no real skill or knowledge is needed to execute either.

An idiot scratch is done on disassembly and/or reassembly. Not something that happens under normal operation, it was done under maintenance, obviously by someone who is taking something apart and they do not know how to properly do it.

It's just how I feel about it, you can feel however you like
 
I was thinking about starting another 1911 photo thread called "Show Us Your Idiot Scratch". :p

All of my firearms will have a scratch of some sort, because all of them are shooter and used often... At one point all of the peoples who will recieved a firearm from my will, wont really care about those scratches... JP.;)

We will see whether Nighthawk starts a trend with their GRP Recon. Could be in a few years all the cool kids will be buying pre-scratched pistols at premium prices. JP might be able to turn a profit on his LB :p

I just read in Gun Weekly that starting in 2016, all Les Baer 1911 platform guns will be coming out with pre-scratched frames. This is a very bold move in my opinion but you can bet after they start to become circulated, folks will be scratching their non-scratched guns on purpose, just so that they have the same appearance as a Les Baer. Who would have guessed!

Hope my LB Concept V SS 45 ACP come in pre scratch, this way it will have just the right size scratch and will save me some aggravation... JP.:cool::cool::cool:
 
...forgot to mention...there are a few different levels of scratches you can get...and they don't call them "scratches" either. I remember one of them is called the "Operator's Mark"...it is a pretty serious scratch... obviously repeated a number of times by someone who is really hardcore. For something less agressive, you can get the "Shooter's Line". I think there is a third one but I can't remember it.
