"The legendary 1911 idiot scratch'

Nighthawk beat them to it with this poseur special :p

Except, of course, they omitted putting wear on the grips.

Is it just me, or does this Nighthawk look like unwholly sh1t!? I can't imagine anyone aspiring to this kind of finish particularly on a high end 1911 like NH or Les Baer. User wear is one thing, but to start out with a finish that makes the gun look all banged up is just stupid imho. Sad day when a Norinco "looks" better than a Nighthawk.

If you "need" to...... With some standard hard plastic packaging material, a sharpie, ahole punch, a pair of scissors & a few minutes of time you can make yourself a handy-dandy idiot scratch prevention tool:

Easily slips on & off for disassembly & reassembly. Prevents the underside of the rear of the slide stop from scoring the frame.

Too late for many of the 'oldies' but worthwhile if you've bought a spankin' new 1911........... ;)

wow, too much work for the benefit. Just take your time and re-assemble carefully.

I just cant understand when people have the scratch going radially down to the trigger. It shouldn't be called an idiot scratch, more of an incompetence scratch.

to cause something like this, this guys shouldn't be trusted with a loaded firearm

Before I recived my first 1911 I thought maybe it's hard to put together. That's why so many of them have this scratch. Not wanting to judge before I tried it myself. Now I know that they're idiots.

A nice trick to avoid it, take out the spring in the plunger tube assembly and remove a few links on the spring. lessons the tension and allows the slide stop to pop in easier.

I bought a used Colt Combat Elite (pre-enhanced) with an idiot scratch and some other minor negative points. I was able to get the price down from $1k to $650. The other 1911 I have have doesn't have any scratches. Once finally cleaned, and oiled, shoots like a champ.

The scratch is minor - haven't had a chance to buy a light steel wool to polish it off yet. There was a video by MoisinVirus in YouTube where he shows how to fix it up.

I did it to my SAM Military Enhanced. I left it as a reminder for me to work carefully and patiently.

All you perfect people have probably never dropped a glass, stubbed your toe or rounded off a nut using pliers because you didn't have wrenches handy.

A lot of money [and in USD] for something that can be made yourself in about 10 mins from stuff laying around the house.

But yeah, for someone who's not handy or can't be bothered, at least there is an alternative out there.

When I re assemble my pistols I try to take care not to scratch the frame. My first pistol (Springfield GI bought brand new in '07) has a scratch because I didn't know better. The first thing I did when I got it home was tear it apart and put it back together to see how it all worked. I had never heard of an idiot mark. I wasn't a pistol expert, and I'm still not to this day. I've had a couple or three 1911s since then and even though its the only one I've done it to, some have the scratch and some don't. I have bought very few brand new, most are used. Its never been a deal breaker though.

Some people are very careful with their belongings and try to take the best care they can. Nothing wrong with that, its commendable. Some people are careless. I consider myself a "careful" person with my stuff for the most part. Mistakes are made though, and I have a pistol that has one because of me. To label someone as an idiot because of a scratch on their gun or to assume that "if they did that what else is wrong with it" is pointless.

Just my opinion.
