Hmmmm first long weekend off in quite a while.... I'm bored...

A trip down the block to Rob's sporting goods should cure that....

Oh great now what have I gotten myself into?

Who thought up this piece of crap?

Ugh... I was saving this for my 300WM build but I guess it serves a more immediate need here...

What was the measurements of the groups in the first post?

Group? What group? That my fellow Nut is what you call a "modified choke pattern"....

Shot at 100M, gusty as all heck... Diddent measure it just shook my head and walked away....

My motivation for this lil project kicked into overdrive when a fellow Nut shot this group with factory irons outta a Black Special just as I arrived...

If his 3K semi auto can do that my $400 Stevens should do better.... Out of the box... With no mods... Because everyone else here shoots sub MOA with Winchester white box out of a savage Axis.... :snicker:

Nah im pretty sure the OP is just being a smart ass cuz he got outshot with iron sights :ang3:nest:

Hell yeah I did... But group after group this rifle does not improve... It's consistently around the 2" mark with every 55gr load I tried over the last 2 days.... Shooting off a sandbag, bipod, elbows, different holds, retorque the action bolts, cleaning, I have around 150rnds down the pipe so far so it should have settled down by now....

I have a few more mods to try... And a bunch of fire formed brass to play with now ;)

This threads just getting started.

how tight did u do the action screws??

i know it seems like a silly question but iv seen guys torque em waaaay down and put all kinds of stress on the action... if you find they really need to be tightened down then a bedding job can be DIY for pretty cheap! since cheap seems to be the name of the game

Not stupid tight just snug... I did notice a few spots some devcon would tighten things up a bit in that giant open cavern of a stock... Like I said... I few more mod's to try.

I also see this rifle can't seem to stay on target thru recoil... I think I'm going to feed it a few cheese burgers tommorow and see if it helps...

How much did it cost you. I have been looking to get a stevens in .223, hoping I could find one for under $400 and dont seem to be having much luck.

$369.00 plus tax, wholesale has them listed @ $359 on there web site... It was a toss up between the Stevens and Axis for me, the Stevens was 5min from my house and the Axis was an hour drive away... I think I would of enjoyed the Axis more from a value per dollar perspective but I have enough 3x9 bushnell scopes and floppy savage stocks to last me a lifetime already

After a good nite sleep and a fresh pair of eyes I do see part of my issue, the bedding on this rifle is horrible!

A lesser man would just knock out the front pillar and grind it down some to encourage the action to suck into the stock... But the back pillar? C'mon! Flat surface of the mag retainer torqued into a round receiver?....

Looks like I need to go on a little shopping trip :)

As I mentioned before, this is all live action
Thanks to my trusty IPhone I update the thread as things happen :D

Stay tuned... Off to the range to test the Rifle Basix.

Neat little project.

Although it looks less then ideal, these factory plastic stocks support the action BETTER then some big name/dollar stocks. With some bedding and the forend opened up, these stocks can serve you very well into the limits of the factory barrel (around 1/2 min on average, sub MOA almost always).

Forget about hoping factory ammo will give you superb results. No without some luck and some pricey match ammo are you going to get great results.

Handloading a properly bedded rifle will yield far more interesting results.

Look forward to more results.

Why is the Stevens 200 so inaccurate? When I compared one to a Savage 11/111 they looked almost identica (besides the trigger)l. So why does the OP's Stevens get over an inch grouping yet a 11/111 get sub one inch?
