Hehe, yeah I reckon you're right.

Is there any rule of thumb for a velocity when lead starts to really foul things up? I shoot buckshot out of my 308 regularly as a gallery load, but down around 700-800 fps. No fouling at those speeds that I've noticed.
 
Interesting read. I am just in the process of studying up on reduced loads for my H&R 30-30. I picked up some 150 gr Berry Bullets. Have some 700X on hand and H4895 that I will try. Unfortunate my Red Dot is long gone. Have also read of guys using Pyrodex as well. Don't hunt much with ML anymore so may give that a try as well.

Avoiding the casting part at this time dispite having all the equipment to do so except for a proper mold. That may be next!

I am thinking of doing up some 7mm Rem Mag with 130 or 140 gr and H4895.I found a sierra load and max load is 56.7 grs. for a 130 gr bullet so 56.7 X .6(60%) is 34.02 grs to start with.
Now my question is . Is this load safe from say 34.1 grains all the way up to say minium load(50.7 grains).My nephew is going to start using my old ruger 7mm Rem mag and I would like to make a week load for it that won't beat him up until he gets bigger.
I think it should be but thought I would throw it out there.

yes, that's my understanding. Any load that is at least 60% (or higher) up to the max is OK.

Try the 120gr 7mm Sierra Pro Hunter bullets for your reduced loads. Used them a lot in a 7mm08 for getting kids started. They shoot well in the 2400-2500 fps range, aren't expensive, and are even a decent deer bullet if you keep them below 2900 fps.

for which cartridge? I've really good results with IMR4895 and cast bullets in the small to medium bores - 30-06, 35 whelen, 9.3x57, 9.3x62. In larger bore the IMR4198 has the edge. Two very good cast bullet powders and by my experience at least they have a very wide useful range and tolerate downloading better than most.

Going to try it in a few. 6.5's (Swede, Carcano, Jap), but mostly 7.62x54r.
 
I know 4895 is 'recommended' for low velocity/recoil loads. Have you seen any data that support 4227 or 4198? Would be great to see some low recoil load suggestions for .308 with those... sorry a bit off topic from the OP.
