The Lost Art of "Cut Shells"

Was told by an mnr guy to do that when I was out partridge hunting as people were complaining about bears harassing bird hunters...came from a conversation about from me not being allowed to carry slugs while bird hunting.

This is one of the stupidest things I have seen in a while. Lets shoot a .790" shotshell through a .729" barrel and then through a .678" full choke. You guys know that you can shoot 444 Marlin out of a .410 too, right? If it doesn't blow up the first time it's OK? Seriously folks, grab some brains!

Cut shells, bore obstructions, steel shot through a full choke, these are all the same thing to different degrees. Knowing that you can cut a shell and use it as a slug is not a bad thing to know, and in a survival situation could mean the difference between life and death. However, it is something that the firearm was NOT designed to do and you are taking a chance every time you do it. Same with steel shot through a full choke. Many shotgun owners shoot steel through full chokes for a while and nothing happens, then one day BOOM. The point is that there is no reason under normal circumstances to put yourself in danger for no real reason. That's what slugs are made for.

Those are all the result of cut shells Grouse Man?

Its my photo, from another thread.
I took the photo at SHOT iin Vegas in Jan.
The booth vendor was a gunsmith service that did new chokes on old barrels, IIRC. So over the years they got a lot of blowed-up barrels to repair.

I seem to recall seeing a clip taken from the Magpul shotgun DVD in which Chris Costa demonstrates the technique.
