The M1 Garand Build Thread

Coming along nicely gamble. Like that dk. wal. stock.

as for...
... cp:
No offence, WHY?. :p

I was planning on getting the regular lock to but I seen these and they seemed to look cool on the rifles they were on, mind you if there isn't any practical purpose no need to spend the extra $40.

Current progress.....

Two 308 build buckets....

Rough assembly with hand turn of the barrel (off 360 degrees obviously)

The stock is soooo tight. I have to do some sanding I think. I can't get the trigger guard to close at all.

Test fired mine today.

It's accurate, shoot well. But it fails to feed a round in the chamber. As if the bolt wasn't going all the way back.

I was shooting 168gr Remington Core-lokt. With an adjustable gas plug with the smallest plug screwed in.
Op rod was also rubbing on the wood while firing.

We were shooting 1in groups at 25yards sitting.

BTW total cost if you don't mind sharing.

Mine is close to finished. Am at an even grand so far. (with some excellent deals from fellow members(& you know who you'se are, Thanks!), and also, a couple 'gifted' parts like gas cyl./plug, Thanks Kevin M)
Maybe $200 or so still left to spend on 'er.

So... $1200 min., $1500 max, will build ya a decent M1 Garand rifle.

Now, if I never do see that bolt from Constantine .... add a hundred bucks to ^.

I still need the barrel (probably a new criterion), an op rod catch and the follower and slide assembly.

I should have bought everything I could've from Numrich at once. Shipping and duty costs are cringe-worthy.

So I was researching a bit on trimming the shoulder of the barrel back so the barrel isn't so far off index when hand tightened and came across a couple threads of people using a 1-1/8" bi metal hole saw to take a few thousandths off. Anyone ever try this method?

I removed mine by using lapping compound inbetween the faces. The stuff from Can Tire worked fine. Don't know if this is kosher, but brought that within 15degs and torqued from there. Just be sure your surfaces are cleaned up before torquing.

Total cost, $1560 after all parts deliered + duty + tax where applicable + re park @ vulcan gun works.....

Post pic later.

What parts are people having a hard time locating for their builds

I was just wondering what parts people may be having a hard time finding for their builds?

Hay many degrees off index were you before lapping?

Got your bolt ?

Around 30 degrees, on both of my barrels.

As for hardest to find parts, for me, it has been the op rod catch assembly, which once I found, I bought 5, and am selling them for what they cost me.

Also, have a bunch of parts from Sarco, but they fudged my address, so now they are sitting on the other side of Canada, being bounced around by CanadaPost.

I'm sure I've asked this before elsewhere, but where are you guys getting barrels from? Criterion sells them for under $300, and I'd like to get one in Canada without being raped over the price. There is no way in hell I'm paying what some people are asking for these things.

Sarco? Brownells?

Used and in good shape is fine, too. Feel free to PM me, as I'm really scratching my head over this.

Same goes for sights... I might even give up and just get a set of Norinco M305 sights and park them to match!
