The M1 Garand Build Thread

I'm sure I've asked this before elsewhere, but where are you guys getting barrels from? Criterion sells them for under $300, and I'd like to get one in Canada without being raped over the price. There is no way in hell I'm paying what some people are asking for these things.

Since barrels are a controlled item when exporting from the US, it's a long and pricey proposition to import one. You pretty much have to double the cost you see them going for down South. So getting a new M1 barrel in Canada for under $300 is nearly all but impossible; even decent used ones are selling in the neighborhood of $200.

Heck, a decent used one will do. I just don't understand why a commonly made item is such a trick to import. One of the dealers here could import in bulk and make a killing, even with a modest mark up. Who is doing imports now?

Joesy: I need the whole sight. But what used to go for $60 for a used set is $100+ or more up here now. No freakin' way I'm paying that for 70 year old steel. Might as well go all the way and get a used M1A/M305/M14 sight for that price.

Got your bolt ?

No Mega, not yet.
A fellow member/friend, he offered to let me use his hy-tec financial purchasing instruments to facilitate the EMT/(FRAUD ALERT) E-bay sourced buys. Bless his generous heart  :).
Now, it's HIM been calling the customs agent mentioned back a few pages on here, and leaving messages that have yet to be returned ... and he's on to CP too, trying to hunt it down for me.. Tracking shows as stalled in Mississauga. Going on 12 weeks since ordering.

That follower ass'y you sent was perfect ... thanks man.

You shot yours yet?.
Can we get a range report when you can get around to it?.

Would a NHW marked gas plug (New Haven Watch Company Inc) be MORE correct for my 1954 IHC. I have an unmarked one on it now and is just marked with a large O which I believe is Henry Owens & Company Inc which made them for the IHC

My 54 all IHC rifle has a " NHC IHC" plug. The plug should say IHC on it though.

Hope that helps some.

Edit. Found this:

International used two different gas plugs. The first were marked IHC and O in serifed letters, the later IHC and NHC in san serifed letters. The early IHC and O marked are rare and hard to find.

Drat - got my kit and the seller forgot two barrels and all three op rod catch assemblies. Worse still, he sold off the rest of the catch assemblies :(

Back to searching I guess...

Welp, I've given up on searching for the occasional sweet deal on parts as it seems Numrich is cheaper then virtually everywhere else, I ordered the last of what I need. Came to 314 shipped but holy crap with the exchange rate it increased by $45. Oh well at least I'll finally be able to shot it soon.

Does anyone know of a gunsmith in the Winnipeg/south-east Manitoba area that has the tools to install a new barrel?

I talked to Rob @ RDP about doing one about 4-5 months ago. He said he'd done it before and figured he could do it again. Try giving him a call. In the meantime I've bought all the necessary gear to do mine myself.

What have people been using to re-blacken the stainless steel gas cylinders? I have seen a few things on line but wanted to hear some first hand results.

Sandblast the gas cylinder and use the Caswell stuff diluted 1:1 with water. (dip it in there for a good 30min)

Drop me a PM if you want a close-up of the results.
