The M1 Garand Build Thread

I picked up a few of the SFRC receivers back when they were on sale, and ordered up a Garand Guy kit from a non sponsored import company who's name starts with an A, ends with a H, and has #### in the center . I figured with the extra time on my hands (read - unemployed) I'd give a Garand build a go. It was fairly painless, and went together well. Barrel timing was not as bad as I was expecting, and with the right tools pretty basic.

My one screw up was not ordering a handle/extension for my pull through reamer :(. Anyone in the Calgary area have one they could lend me to finish this one off?

Don't know what brand of pull thru reamer you have, but as long as the reamer rod clears the muzzle you can file a couple of flats on it and use an ordinary T handle tap wrench to turn it. I did this with a Clymer rod yrs ago and it works well.

PM me. I have all the tools and am in Calgary.

Finally my third is complete. It is a Breda model on a walnut stock. A big thank you to member Beretta Armorer for helping me out with the barrelling, parkerizing and a few parts. I would like to do just one more build, but that is what I said about the last one. It is a lot of fun piecing these guys together, although at times a bit costly.

I ordered the cheaper GG kit that used some of the parts from the BM59 kit and some of the refinished parts to make it work. Came with a BM59 stock converted to work with a Garand. Had to remove a good chunk of wood from the stock to make room for the follower rod.

Only issue I have now is that the new production rear sight is too stiff to install. Has anyone had that issue? Google only brings up results about sights that are too loose.

I have my Norinco M14 sight in a drawer, but I want to see if I can this one to work.

Happy November! Goodies showed up Monday. Time for a Guy Fawkes Commemorative Build.

So, Could not resist the $25 receivers from SFRC so picked up a couple.

Anyone want to provide an update on the best place to grab parts? Are all those NOS bolts still available from Greece?

Also, what are people putting 7.62 garands using for head space guages?

Also, anyone try those "re-built" op-rods from Numerich?

I've got an Itallian rod, from Sarco, that was converted from 7.62 back to 30/06 length. Works Ok, but I had to shorten the operating spring about 1/2 in. They've got some brand new stocks, same scenario, very nice and reasonably priced.

Grizz

I've installed a Criterion .308 barrel on my Berretta receiver. I used Forster (civilian) gauges after a bout with my Clymer pull-through reamer (.308). :) Everything is nice and tight in the chamber.

Life is good!

Cheers,

Barney

For those who are tracking the current costs of good parts for a first class Garand build using a Criterion barrel I just went thru the exercise again and it works out to $1350 incl a bargain Beretta or Breda receiver. The cost is in the other parts. The receiver is basically a gift these days.

Nice pile of parts you have there I see a few duplicate ones. I have the same Clymer go no go gauges I bought with their pull thru reamer, extension and handle pricey with the dollar and CBSA adding their share, but made barrel installs quick, easy, and accurate. I have done two on the third I should break even if I was paying a smith, I have a lathe that helped too. The AR pistol grip will be a nice touch. lol Good luck

Hello all,

I want to bring my '54 International Harvester back into the bush but I'm not too keen on risking the wood... And she's heavy to carry. I'm having a heck of a time finding synthetic furniture for sale. Whaddya reckon?
