The M1 Garand Build Thread

Kudos to you Squinty, ... that is the spirit of the CGN that so many of us sooo appreciate.
Characters like you are the beating heart of this place.

Which reminds me ... Have a few prior "pay it forward" favours to set square soon.

I thank you for your kindness squinty!
Is there a safe way to fire the rifle without the catch? Just curious.
IE bolt action?

It probably would be safe, but I would not do it. I am still willing to send you the op rod catch and that way you won't need to experiment

Here is a few pictures, completed a few months now with a few hundred rounds through.
As it is shown at the moment the only PB marked parts are the rear sight base, ele/wind nobs, op rod. gas lock, follower, follower arm, op rod catch, and the clip latch.
I have a unused PB trigger housing waiting for PB internal parts and a FKF Danish web sling that I yet to put on. The stock is from Boyds.

What do these builds cost if your starting with a stripped receiver. Is getting all the parts still easily doable?

alrighty i have a small range report for my m1 garand finally! :) here is my rifle

3slK5vT.jpg

beretta receiver
SA parts
SA Oprod
criterion barrel chambered in .308/7.62x51
Smith Enterprises Inc M1 Garand Muzzle brake ( brownells has it)

here are the loadouts i tested today!

PPU brass
CCI large rifle magnum primers
Hodgdon H4895
Frontier Plated Spire point flat base 155gr bullets ( not crimped)

all cases trimmed to 2.005 and OAL is at 2.800.

i had 2 clips (16 rounds) at 39gr of 4895, 2 clips at 40 gr , 2 clips at 42 gr. the 2 clips at 39gr i only had one misfeed ( bullet did not feed properly into the chamber). the 2 clips at 40gr and 42 gr performed flawlessly. i did not take any pictures of my grouping because it was 30 yards in an indoor range and i was standing off hand shooting. with the muzzle brake i was double plugging and it was still very loud ( time to get custom molded earplugs). i will load 4 clips at 39.5 gr and at 40 gr and see how it performs at a 100 yard outdoor range bench rest shooting. i am hoping to see some nice groups. other then that i felt like this while i was shooting

It depends on what you consider "easy". The cost varies on the quality of the parts. Used, NOS, refinished, etc. Do you have access to the proper tools. I would say that the average build would be in excess of $1200.00. It may seem expensive but unlike the AR 15 there are a limited amount of receivers to work with.

You don't "need" expensive tools.

A person can "MacGyver" various tools and set ups for barrel installation, but why run the risk of damaging an expensive barrel or a receiver in the process. Proper tools are always the best way to go to protect your investment.

I noticed Constantine(redfile3) is no longer selling parts, especially bolts on ebay. Does anyone have a contact with
good parts?
josey wales on CGN has parts from time to time and is great.
Numrich is a good source for op rods and various things, but shipping is pricey. The dollar is crap too...

I was careful. It was a used barrel. Aluminium jaws and aluminium blocks to distribute the load in the right places. Not a mark or ding was caused. I knew it would make some cringe ;)

I just thought I would post a couple of pics of this PB rear sight I have acquired for the guys building Italian Garand's, it comes with a PB marked aperture, it was very tough to get a proper pic as the stamping are small:

PING! After collecting parts for about 2 years and almost giving up a couple times my 1942 Springfield is whole and shoots awesome! A big thank you to everyone on this site that helped me to get to this point, especially Squinty, Josey Wales, and ZDragunov.

ZDragunov did an amazing job installing the NOS 1955 SA barrel, which zeroed pretty much bang on at 100 yards with 10 clicks up, and rear and front sight zero. I was compensating low because i thought it would be hitting high :) was shooting military duplicate loads with hornady 150gr fmjbt
Rang the 200 yard gong with the last round I had so it was an even better evening.
