The M1 Garand Build Thread

Op-rod Parkerizing

Parked one of my op-rods today. Skinny long things are hard to fit into a pot so I built this.

3' of 3" abs glued to a toilet flange. Left the knockout in place and I can screw it to the floor to stop it from falling over. 1 gallon of parkerizing solution almost fills the tube and covers the rod with lots extra. I heated the mix in a large pot to 200 F. While the soup was heating up I preheated the oprod at 170 F. When the solution was hot it was poured into the tube and the now warmed op-rod inserted into the mix. (mechanics wire wedged into tube to remove when done) After 10 minutes it was finished cooking and I removed the rod, soaked it with some Castrol and then gun grease.

Looks as good as new and everything measures to specs!

Jeeze. All these Garands and not one person willing to part with an op rod catch. Last part I need before I can post photos for you all!

You scored a really good looking stockset there wbaad. How does it fit?.
That is a legit Garand you've built. Congrats.

Thanks! It fits perfect on the action, and I mean perfect. There is a tiny gap at the lower band because the one I got has a tiny bend. It will be fixed or replaced. Very nice wood for the money.

I just sent you a PM. I will send you an operating rod catch. You need it now and I need one for a later build. Just replace this op rod catch later. But PM me your address and I will send it to you
