The M1 Garand Build Thread

All new barrels are short chambered and require finish reaming in order to establish proper headspace. Of all the NOS GI barrels that I've installed I only found one that would accept the "go" gauge with a used GI bolt w/o any finish reaming. It is important that proper headspace is established on both the "go" and "no-go" gauges.

OK, so how would one deal with installing a Used barrel?

You can usually find a bolt that will headspace correctly with a used barrel. There are plus/minus manufacturing tolerances on all parts. Also, a used bolt will show some degree of wear on the rear of the locking lugs. The lug seats of the receiver are also subject to wear. When headspacing a particular bolt/barrel/ receiver combination you need to make sure that the bolt will close fully on the "go" gauge. While it is desirable that the bolt not close on the "no-go" gauge, it is still acceptable that the bolt not close on the "field" gauge.

Basically the "no-go" gauge was the max limit when fitting a new barrel while the "field" gauge is the max limit when checking rifles in use.

The -19 SA and postwar SA bolts tend to be the longest, while the -12SA bolts tend to be a tad shorter.

I have seen in the thread that someone is at 1400$ so far
By building a garand is there any hopes to have project accomplished just shy of 1000$?

Ok cool, think i'm giving myself in for this project.
Will study parts source and try to keep it down 1000$ before ordering all.
This is excluding specialty tools, as they will add volume to my DIY gunsmith tool collection

Anyone buy any parts from ebay that uses the "Global Shipping Program". They factor in a fee for importing even if there's no import charges. What a money grab, makes getting parts even harder.

I'd try to talk the vendor into just shipping by US mail and avoiding the extra costs of this additional filter center. My impression is that they also scrutinize export shipments against ebay policies which might cause some things not to be shipped.

Knowledge is every bit as important as are tools and parts. I'd recommend Kuhnhausen's comprehensive Shop Manual on the M1 and M14 to any aspiring Garand builder. Kulek's booklet, The M1 Garand Complete Assembly Guide, is also useful with a few caveats.

We cancelled the auction and went another route, apparently this global shipping is a real money grab, lots of complaints.

I tried, once, to order an M1 carbine handguard. Pitney-Bowes is the brokerage they use, and if they find anything that is ex-military firearm related, they class it as Controlled Goods and seize the shipment. It took me 4 months to get my money back and the seller (Ray's Surplus) ended up being out the money AND the handguard. This one event caused them to no longer ship to Canada.

Now, I e-mail first and tell them that I won't buy from them if they use the GSP. In short: DON'T DO IT.

If you stayed under $750, I'm guessing you got some parts lots for cheap and likely do not have a new-in-wrap barrel. The op rod will likely be a $150+ expense, FWIW.

Barrel was my most pricey part and was NOS $255 shipped, numrich has op-rods for $111 then shipping so ya about 150.

That's good to know, bastards.

I'd love to see the breakdown. I get a lot of my stuff in bulk or at dealer pricing and I'm well over $750 on my build. I would be over it, even if I had used a $250 barrel instead of the .308 Criterion I went with in the end.

I am at over 2000$ with all the brokerage, shipping and tools. (+bayo and slings)

Ya something wasn't right when I did my math think I forgot to add a couple numbers I'm at approx. $1052
Barrel $255
Gas Cylinder $105
Trigger Assembly $125
Bolt $80
Handguards $60
Stock $50
Ferrule, Butt Swivel, Buttplate Screws, Gas plug $58
Op-rod Catch, Follower+ Slide, Follower Arm, Bullet Guide $125
Follower Rod, front sight screw $16
Receiver $68
Clip Latch, pin, front sight, rear sight aperture, spring, base $110

Seems like it's the barrel thats the biggest pain to find,
Any top notch cdn vendors carrying them? At the 250$ price point of course.
Wgamble 89, id be ready to get to your price point for thIs build, id even up it by 100$ to get a brand new boyds stock.

Numrich had .308 Criterion barrels for 165. last time I checked. Gotta wonder why the op rod is so expensive? Just like anything else, gotta shop around. Even so, can't get into a project like this without spending some bucks.

Grizz

Numrich won't ship the barrels to Canada. Oprods are expensive because nobody is making new ones. Don't forget that we are competing with Americans for these parts, and they drive the prices.
