The M1 Garand Build Thread

One more part to arrive (rear sling swivel, somehow forgot to order one) and everything is in and ready. Barrel goes on this weekend.

Edit: Barrel is on and everything seems to function very nicely :)

Anyone try to get a parts kit from Sarco? Just sent them an email regarding their BM59 kits. I asked them if they could omit the barrel and for now the magazine and ship it. Need to find out whether that magazine is legal here after its been pinned. I told them they have a damn good market up here they can ship them.

Also asked IRunGuns as a secondary measure incase Sarco doesn't want to deal with individual Canadian consumers.

The BM-59 is prohibited isn't it? Would you try and fit the BM59 parts on a garand receiver? A garand would need some heavy modifications to fit that magazine i would think.

I was going that route. Tried to arrange for an American 'smith to do the modification but according to him the BATF has said that the import of the receiver is illegal. Sarco had said they would send the kit as long as I phone in the order. Mag would need to be pinned and I do not think they would bother to do so. I would inclined to use the M1A style mag conversion.

Thank you FALover. I'll see if I can get someone down south to pin and ship them. If not, as you said, an M14 mag can be made to work.

BM59 itself is prohibited, yes. But it's being built upon a Garand receiver and as long as it's semi auto, completely legal.

Always wondered if just getting them to disassemble the magazine and ship it in pieces, since then it isn't a complete magazine, would get around that? ;)

Finally got mine finished!! Went from a bucket of parts to a beautiful rifle!! Thanks to Jonh172 for helping me with installing barrels, indexing, reaming and re-parking them. Something I couldn't have done. I should mention that this one of two nearly identical rifles. The other went to my buddy.

to this...

Shot great at the range today.

Awesome looking twins. You guyz must be proud. Time to break open the "Band of Brothers" DVD boxed set and watch while fondling the Garands. :)

YMMV
Meaning, your movie may vary LOL

Cheers and keep on helping the noooobs around here

I only was able to get out one time early this week with a driving snow. But that was ok. I had just set up some clay pigeons to act as a reactive target @ 25/50/100yrds. Worked wonders! Gun shoots straighter than I do. Cycles very smoothly - extremely pleased!

The whole idea for me behind this project was to build a bear gun in .308. I got better than I ever expected. Hopefully I can take down a bruin with it in a months time if the snow will melt!

I should have specified the Triplets!
Two are identical (308) and one is fraternal (30-06)
The mail-mans baby on the end is an all original 54 PB I've had for almost 10 years, back when an all matching $450 M1 was expensive LOL!

But, same deal, I have only gotten a chance to fire the 2 preliminary rounds of a barrel break in in my 30-06!
But I have 200 prepped brass and some free time next week, I will get out there!

Thats awesome man, love the collection!

I wish I could say they were mine but the 2 308's went to 2 very good homes!
It was a nice feeling though, dreaming it was my collection while taking those pictures lol!

Thanks again Birdblaster for giving me the opportunity to work on them!

I broke in the barrel on my .308 Garand build this weekend and I couldn't have been more happy with the results. A nice, accurate rifle that I will enjoy more and more! Nothing like hearing that ping first hand :)
