The man with one gun

I've pondered this idea and decided it can't be done.

One gun ? ? ? Nope....

At the least, you NEED 3 guns - minimum.

- one 22lr
- one CF rifle
- one shotgun

If you want to expand this a bit, you can add muzzle loader to this short list too.

This is a bare minimum requirement.

Not sure how you can own just one CF rifle - especially if you hunt and shoot varmints. Target shooting adds another bunch of possibilities too.

You gotta have this to be a CGN'er....anything else is NUTS.....

.

Sounds like a minimun to me. Personally... .22lr, .30-06, 12 gauge. I have over 14 firearms, but those are three that can cover all huntable animals in North America, or anywhere for that matter. Basic, easily available, ammo is everywhere, and gets the job done.

Beware the man with only one rifle, he probably knows how to use it very well.

I'd say 'Beware the man who shoots all the time, he probably knows how to do it very well.'

More practice with fewer calibers, not fewer guns, would probably make someone more proficient at riflecraft when gauging ballistics and wind effects. I can see the point of being familiar with your firearm eg. trigger control, but that comes with practice, not mere ownership. I'm getting to know the .22 inside and out no matter which gun. I can see the same happening for the .223 and .308 as well.

Calibers for me:
.22 LR
.223 Rem
.308 Win
7mm Rem Mag (optional?)
.375 H&H Mag

All the old timers that taught me to hunt were one gun men and we got our animal every year. I only have one centerfire I hunt with. I would say no hunter should have less than four in the safe. Not only a Rimfire, Centerfire and shotgun. But a loaner for a buddy or girlfriend. Having a loaner does wonders for bringing new folks into the sport.

I will add that my "one gun" changed for many years until I found the perfect fit. I love the scout mounted optics so I can keep both eyes open and never get another scope cut. LOL Also the advances made by new calibers are too good to pass up sometimes. The new .338 federal is an amazing round for everything in BC and Ontario. And carbines are such a joy to carry ! It took about 4 different "one guns", but finding the best fit is key if you don't want safe queens clanking around.

Most old timers were "one gun men" because that's what they could afford. many people make a virtue of being poor, doesn't make it true. I know many one gun guys that can't shoot for squat. Of course, i know a few multi gun guys who can't shoot for squat either. the moral of the story? Practice, practice, practice. - dan

I think a person could easily live off the land for a long time with an enfield. Cheap ammo, acurate, easy to maintain. not a bad zombie gun either. all for a couple hundred bucks. dont get me wrong .......ive ownwed and sold my share of high speed ###y deer ,varmint and bird guns but like the idea and simplicity of using a gun as a tool to feed and defend urself in the event of the inevitable zompocalipse!

I could never be a one gun guy. I like having a nice collection to take out to the range, or to polish up and clean. If I were to be a one gun man the only way it is possible in my mind is to get a nice german made drilling (dreilling???) I have one that would be the most perfect hunting gun if it was not such a collector's item. SxS 16 ga over a 7x57 with a 22 mag insert for one of the 16 barrels makes it capable of taking anything. That would be my one gun if I could only own one

Maybe colourful pictures will help. This game is just about as varied as you can get in both size and terrain hunted. Notice the common denominator. Once again, yea or nay, the point is moot.

So Chuck, those are nice pics. The gun is nice too. It looks to be a LH Winchester with an aftermarket stock and a Leupold Scope. What chambering?

I tend to agree with this... well... kind of...

- One larger center fire gun for moose and the likes
- One smaller one for deers and the likes
- One gun for varmint
- One gun for plinking
- One AR for service rifle
- One VZ for CQB
- One 22lr and one shotgun for small games
- One center fire and one rimfire target rifle
- One heirloom
- One to lend to gun-less friends
- One restricted rifle
- One revolver
- One semi-automatic
- One falling block
- One lever action
- One bolt action
- One milsurp

And then, you need some guns for the spouse...
And then you need something you could trade-off...
And then you need something to fight off the zombies...
And then you need something to piss off a Liberal...

I guess in a way I look at guns as what they are -tools - I won't use a chisel as a screw driver or a sledge hammer on a finishing nail. 1 gun for everything , no thx.

I'm a one gun guy. Guess that makes me a Fudd.

One gun for big game
One gun for Varmint and paper punching
One Black powder
One rimfire
One shotgun

The task of hunting is not as complex as carpentry.

Also a good rifle in lets say 30.06 can fit all ends of the spectrum for North American Game (besides migratory birds).
In reloading one can even load it down to take smaller upland game.

Generations of hunters have managed like this just fine long before gun magazines began wasting ink and paper.

I know a few of OGH's. The majority fall into the "very good hunter/not all that interested in guns" camp. There are a few casual hunters who put 3 down the pipe(maybe)in the fall. The noobs who are just getting into hunting. My buddy who sold off his entire "collection" (save his old mans 3006) becuase he felt like it was dominating his life. Some ranchers who truly view guns as a tool and see no value in having more than one. What do they all have in common? None of them are members of Gunntuz.

I have always liked the idea of having one go-to gun. That would mean not buying any more guns though. That would be hard. It would also make sense to sell most of the guns I have. And that is nearly impossible!
