The Modern Hunter Rifle UPDATED December 10 2015

A huge fan of the 308 Winchester and 7.62mm cartridge. Weight will be the deciding factor for me since carrying a M305 with a riflescope in the woods sucks hard.

The light barrelled version with something either the 6 position collapsible stock or a CTR will weigh in the 7.5 to 8lb area we expect. Not sure how much a M305 weighs.

I have a question that may sound silly. But I'm interested in this gun and it's a deciding factor. How well would a .308 semi auto rifle like this work for a cqb type weapon? I've never fired a 308 ar so I have nothing to compare too. If I bought this it'd be my everything rifle, hunting and self preservation kinda thing.

Having it non restricted means atleast an 18.5" barrel, so right there it kind of limits your CQB criteria, but put a collapsible stock on there and it'd help. Generally the 308 AR's are thought of as more of a designated marksman rifle, but that doesn't mean you have to conform to that train of thought. In a pinch, I'm confident it will cover any niche I ask it to, hence why I've already got my deposit in. I'm with you that this will be my everything rifle as well. My hunting rifle, my self preservation kinda thing, and my middle finger to C68. Yes I have other guns, but I'm so damned excited for this it's not even funny.

If you're worried about pass-through, then it's probably best to take a lighter bullet, say .243 etc that are being offered. 308 is just great for availability etc.

I'm actually looking at getting the 308, and then maybe getting another upper in 22-250 for gophers and yotes.

my Question to the next poster would be, how big of a deal is that proof research carbon fiber wrapped barrel? Are all their claims true, 40% weight reduction, less heat, etc. ? Would love to hear from someone who owns one of those barrels.

This new gun is marketed as a precision rifle not a short barrel cqb rifle.

First of a 308 is not really a cqb cartridge, too powerful with to much penetration. But if you really want a semi auto 308 cqb I suggest a rfb, 18 inch barrel with a 27 inch overall length. It a 1.5-2 moa gun but you don't need a precision rifle for cqb.

Hey Rick, are those carbon fibre barrels really a big deal? On an 18.6 or 20inch is the weight difference going to be big, and accuracy wise am I losing anything at all with going that route?

Accuracy I doubt there is any difference based on the bolt rifles we have built using them. I mean a .2 shooter is a .2 shooter be it a conventional stainless steel barrel or a CFW barrel. I have rifles in both configurations that deliver that sort of accuracy.
Weight is a whole different issue. The heavy contour barrels that are dimensionally similar to the CFW barrels weigh about 35% less than a standard steel barrel does. So to compare a CFW barrel to a Bull profile, yes there is a significant weight difference, however to compare a Government profile (light contour) to the CFW barrel there is little if any discernible difference in weight. You WILL get more shots out of a CFW barrel before heat starts to effect group size than what a light profile barrel will get you. Probably about 1.5 times more shots from the CFW barrel than a light contour barrel based on what my 300 win mags do.

Made the trek to ATRS today and put in my order. I'm Very excited to see the finished product. Was lucky enough to see the first one being cut on the cnc mill.
Rick and the crew are extremely helpful and knowledgeable and the trip down was definitely worth it.

I received my options sheet and all I can say... idunno... I wanted a varmint or bull barrel... no option for barrel profile it seems. The the rail... I dont know what any of them look like. But the options I do have nailed down are as follows

Stainless
Matte
18.6"
Ctr stock
Ergo grip
Cerakote finish
...and thats all I have...

Couple of questions:

What is the make and twist of the 308 barrels?

Any idea what the weight difference would be between the 18.6" Varmint and 20" CFW barrel?

For conventional barrel Lilja, Jury or Proof. For CFW barrel Proof only.
Typically the CFW is 40% lighter than the same size conventional barrel.
Comparing the CFW to the Varmint, I would estimate about a 1 lb difference, the CFW being slightly lighter.
We will have more actual intel on this next week when I get back from a meeting with Proof.

What are the bolt controls like on this rifle? Standard AR? Can use a magpul bad lever? Or are they completely different like how the xcr has its own?

From the pics it looks like the left side bolt release is similar to a AR, however they are giving a option for a ambi bolt release that from the pics looks similar to a SR25 style which in my opinion is a better solution then the BAD lever.

The left side IS an AR10 style bolt release, the right side however is our own design and is not an option, but rather standard equipment.
I will try and get a better photo posted next week of both sides of the lower.

Sorry. I posted this in the other thread.

If a rifle is ordered with the CeraKote finish, is that just the Barrel? Is that just the receiver? or does it include everything including the rail if purchased with the rifle?

The Ambi - Mag release. Is that a standard AR item? Or unique to your rifle design?

Thanks.

There are 3 options as far as CeraKote is goes. Just the barrel, the barrel ,upper and lower, or barrel , upper, lower and metal hand guard.
Pricing on these we are still working on and therefor updating the menu on our website.

Ambi mag can be accomplished either by employing an AR15 Norgon or a similar device that we are making specifically for this rifle. The Norgon is slightly more expensive.

Just me, but if a lot of people opt in for certain things like ceracote, specific barrel profiles, vanilla furniture....would you then offer a chevrolet version of the rifle at a discounted price. I am thinking of price, and from your point of view...ease of manufacture.

I don't know how many people are going to want a cadilac version, i am not wanting a tactical item. Really i want what the topic talks about, a modern hunter. Accurate and dependable without lot of fuss. Again any idea of a time frame...even a ballpark....where a non 308 family chambering would be available?
