Thanks guys. He came in right away on the second morning but while could hear him walking couldn't see him. Waited about an hour then walked about a half mile away and cow called as I walked back to the decoy then raked some brush and gave 3 bull grunts. Not sure which brought him back.
This one came in just like in the movies, moving his head side to side, stopping to rake willows, the whole show. Pretty humbling to watch such a majestic animal like that. Came in without making a single sound.

THIS!! Awesome! I dreammm

Use those shanks with the calf muscle for osso buco. Freeze it and (have it) cross cut with the bone in. It is a shame to turn a fine piece of meat in to hamburgers.

Bit of a late response, had to look it up, looks tasty. Do you suggest the style with cinnamon, bay leaf and gremolata or tomatoes, carrots, celery and onions? (too late for moose but hope to get a deer or two)

What appeals to me is by crosscutting it you can work around the tendons while eating it rather than trying to fillet them off.

There's no hunt as exciting as calling in a trophy bull moose, in my opinion, especially if you hear them from miles away and they don't break cover until they're in close proximity. One that comes to mind is a mid 50" bull that I was playing with calling for about 2 hours. The first time I heard him he was close to 2 miles away. He broke cover at about 8 yards, I was on a rock outcropping by a river and he came from behind. Hearing those antlers raking and brushing against willows, listening intently for a twig to snap periodically , cursing the wind as it picks up and muffles sound as the morning progresses, the bull's grunt that's quiet but travels for miles. It's my favorite hunting, and I'm fine with not shooting, the thrill is in listening to all the noises made by nature on a cold, crisp fall morning. There aren't many places on this planet where your ears ring from the silence.
I know quite a few guys that just boat hunt up and down rivers, they have no idea what they're missing.

Whow-------hearing a Bull Moose call from 2 miles away, you must have some "Bionic Ears". Most Hunters cant hear a Bull from 200 yards away but 2 Miles sounds to me like a story some of these Magazine writers like to lay on the public.

Cheers

I have heard bulls grunting at 2 km... many, many times... I have taken many bulls and do not write for magazines...

Wife's first moose 7mm08 1 shot kill, approx 75 meters. Yes, great spot too drop it

Wife's second moose 7mm08, 78 meters, again 1 shot, then it stepped once and slid down the slope. Tough haul out....approx 400 meters too the nearest driveable trail. Quartered and dragged.....when you think your in half ass shape......try this to get a nice reality check. Good times

Son (Spencer) first moose, approx 50 meters running left to right, 2 shots with his .270 ; scared the crap out of him as it was bedded down and bounced up and started trotting in front of him from his 0900 position across to his 1500 hrs ........he watched it till it was about at 1330 hrs till he shot it. He was rather shocked as he wanted too make sure it wasn't a bull and that it was so close. I was about 300 meters away just making my way to meet up with him: kid was vibrating when I finally met up with him. Much easier haul when you have a jacked up 17 year old with you

This threads killen me. Dad got drawn in combined zone FLC this year in Sask. It's a hard one to get with 250 takes between Fort a la Corn and zones 50 and 43. Lots of farm land and my own hunting land borders the forest to the north so I get Bulls out of the bush to my deer bait as soon as it freezes and the start hitting their shins in the ice. He's 67 now, so I suspect I'll be Doin a lot of work..... But eaten well!

Amazing the differences in this country, through much of it, you do your best not to see them and inevitably will! Usually that's when driving, especially at dusk. You should do some hikes out west, see the Grizzlies, hear and see bugling Elk, watch a bull Moose thrash trees, see a pair of fighting bull Wood Bison, hear the Wolves… man you haven't lived til you do and it's more of an education than any young guy can guy in any city. Get out there! ;)
