The most efficient hunting cartridges

I'm very late to the game, but since energy at 500 yds and not at the muzzle is being compared, isn't this about the "efficiency" of the bullet and not the cartridge?

Scenario; I only have 500 grains of powder and I have to put post-apocalyptic meat on the table, which cartridge do I choose?

How about off.the board....22lr at 4gr/. Here, say 12gr in 22hornet. But then deer here are 100lbs on the hoof say 50 lb on the meat hooks.

Paging 223 for deer thread.

Honorable mention to say 15gr of unique and any 400gr bullet at say 11-1200ft/sec, 45/70 guide gun. If your talking efficiency, that's a dead deer. Maybe not at 500yds, but dead at normal distance.

Now that is an interesting one. I'd say 22 hornet. With good hunting prowess I think a guy could put a lot of meat on the table with it.

Come on man... this is about now, not then.
Don't spoil the fun by talking about hunting prowess. This is about efficiency... not skills man!

I be up and trolling.
Coffee...

I thought I'd find GH and his pal in the snare...

The King of the 22cals. :)

Many threads get bumped, most of them are garbage, but once in a while someone bumps a thread that offers some interesting comparisons, especially as the market offerings evolve. The Accubond is a great bullet, but there are no heavy-for-caliber options in 6mm. I think the 6mm Creedmoor would score quite favorably on this scale, looking at some alternative bullets like the 108gr Berger Elite Hunter it would carry 1185 ft/lbs to 500 yards for 12.1lbs of recoil energy. Ballistics based on 5 loads average max velocity in an 8 pound rifle.

Score = 97.93

I really need to stop reading about the 6mm Creedmoor. This isn't going to end well for my wallet, and the gun safe door doesn't close anymore - I already have to hide one in a useful spot just to button things up.

That is pretty good. Going to gave to make sure that I stay off your radar... he will need some Aloe Vera for that burn.
Savage...pretty funny too

That post was not directed towards anyone in particular but merely a lame attempt to add some jocularity to an otherwise mundane necro-thread.

My sincere apologies are offered to anyone who would be offended at that post. :)

If I was the other side of a debate with you and you brought this to the table...I would hope that I would grin and shake my head " Good burn SC...good burn..."

It encompasses all factors that meld together to make the most "oomph" at the far end of typical hunting shot distances, for the least amount of "oomph" felt on the shoulder

Efficiency to me is both ballistics and how smooth it feeds in a bolt action rifle. The 7x57 wins in both areas. It's also in the "sweet zone" for deer.

I don’t like to complain about your efforts but you listed the 300 PRC with 200gr bullets ?, what if you used the Hornady factory 225gr ELDM ammo ?

Apparently the US Ministry of Deffense disagrees with you, they are saying it’s the most efficient cartridge they have tested out to 2000 yards using the 225gr ELDM bullet  :sniper:
