The Mountain Hunting Thread

Another sheep trip in the books. We didn’t pull a trigger, but still had a blast and learnt a lot about the area. A few rams that were close, just not close enough to feel confident.

30+ different rams, 12 billys, 100+ ewes/lambs (a few came right into camp, coulda pet them), 100+ nannys/kids, 2 big grizz, and a big bull and cow moose ( 5 on one front 4 on the other). It was an exciting trip.

Beauty, tfs Decker
maybe a little bit of angst involved looking at those close rams? it can take a while for a final determination, good times

We were lucky to have quite a bit of time with a couple of the close rams. A few times we were within striking range, but couldn’t get 8 years or a no questions full curl across the nose. A couple the curl came up into the eye plane, but couldn’t see it break the nose plane

The joys of sheep hunting. Trying to get the right angle to be certain of curl.

iirc likely one of Deckers home built projects?
see his threads

You know it! Couple more months here I’ll get started on that big bore stock.

Unreal! Something a lot of us dream about, thank you for sharing.

Also gorgeous rifle, care to give us the details?

Cheers Fred!

The rifles chambered in 6.5 prc with a defiance anti xm and 22” benchmark #1 barrel. I have a AG composites privateer I used with it the first couple years, but decided to go a new route.

My preference goes to nice walnut, so figured I’d build a light walnut for my mountain rifle. Un scoped bare its right at 5 1/2 pounds.

Currently thinking about adding a Spartan flush adaptor to have the option for a bipod.

Another Yukon season-opener 7-day sheep hunt in the books. This is the week I look forward to every other week of the year.

Glassing a ram we like!

The one on the left is the one we want, but they gave us the slip that night.

Spotted another band. After an all day stalk to get into position, these sheep (and the two others still bedded on the cliff as well) fed within 75 yards of us while we laid out in the open ageing them, but we couldn’t make them legal.

Typical lodging for the trip.

There is no place like this!

More to come…

Saw a wolverine on one of the mountains, nasty attitude, but he knew we were trouble, and ran off hurky-jerky with a snarl on his lips.

Could have dip-netted arctic grayling from the streams we were crossing.

Got close enough to harvest sheep several times, and many caribou, including one that walked right into our camp.

We saw a herd of 64 woodland caribou hanging out on the snow pack another day.

It was below freezing some nights, and then scorching without a cloud in the sky for three days.

We met mental challenges, tried to talk ourselves out of that all-day stalk, because we were tired and didn’t want to lose/gain that much elevation. Overcame that, and made ourselves do it.

Travelled 58 km total across some of God’s finest creation.

We picked up the ram we wanted again on the morning of the 6th day. Bedded down on the finger of a cliff. With the hot days, knew he would stay put until 6 o’clock or so. Planned another stalk that got us above him, in good wind and waited.

When he got up we checked, double checked and triple checked he was legal. The angle we were above him didn’t make it easy, and you’ve got to be sure…then he bed down in the shade again, and we waited, holding the shooting position over a ledge…until he stood up.

Then after 4 years, we had a ram down!

My brother-in-law. This sheep is as much his as it is mine.

It’s tricky getting the photo angles right when you’re working with an Iphone balanced precariously on your spotter tripod.

Boned him out on the side of that steep slope, then made the decision to pack out that night, as the next days forecast was 28 degrees.

It was nice to see the sun coming up around 4 o’clock as we packed out the valley. Nothing like walking through grizzly valleys in the dark smelling that tasty to get your situational awareness up!

Me zoning out on the pack-out as the morning light grows.

I’ve got a smile but we are feeling the heavy packs and lack of sleep here.

Made it! Sure was nice to see the cabin and truck!

A dream is now reality.
