The mythical .270...

troutseeker,
The 270 is a great cartridge I have used this solely in the Okanagan and have taken many coyotes,Deer,Moose and more Moose as well as Bear. You will like it!

Have a 270 Husky and a timney trigger is being installed as I type this. The gun is deadly accurate and is used for everything ,but grizzlys. My 300 wm then will be taken out and put into service.

I have a Stevens in .270 win. Even scoped it's very light so a joy to tote all day while climbing all kinds of terrain. And it's deadly accurate.

Had a Savage in 270 loaded with 150gr SST over H4831SC and it shot very accurately. 3000fps

Hit one mulie facing me and turned it turtle - 4 legs straight up. We turned away to start getting our gear in order to clean it up. Turned back a few seconds later to see the legs twitch then lower.

Next thing, the mulie is doing a belly crawl through long grass with us now frantically going for the rifles. A few shots but no hits. It goes behind a clump of samplings.

The lo and behold it bounces up and bounds downhill again with us trying to thread a bullet through these trees.

Deer unfortunately was not recovered. Range would have been around 45yds aimed right at the white patch at the neck/chest.

A few days later, see a big'on up a hill. Set up and he stands up again facing me - yeah.

Ready to bolt and slowly turns quartering to me. Good enough and let one fly. Nice whoop as the deer 5-0's out of there.

Shot is now ranged at 100yds. We walk up to the top of the hill to see what we have got and the blood 'explosion' pretty much indicates a great shot.

I have never seen a blood trail like this. We find the deer crashed about 40yds from where we hit it. The deer has pretty much bleed itself out - what a mess.

On skinning, the entrance wound is 2"X3" just behind the front shoulder. Exit is 3"X3" on the last rear rib on the opposite side. Almost stuff a fist into the hole.

So at 3000fps, the SST can provide some serious boiler room performance. Why the first one flipped on its back but still bounded away is a mystery?

Sold the rifle soon after. It worked but it didn't work?????

For the same type of performance, I would go with the 6.5-06 given my affinity to the 6.5.

If you want to stretch the legs on your new rifle, just give me a shout and we can go do some plinking.

Jerry

jerry, don;t think that had anything to do with the rifle or chambering, rather a thinly constructed bullet driven at high speeds.

Farthest I've tracked anything hit with a .270 (15+ animals) was 40yrds.

I wonder what kind of damage the new Ultra magateers are getting when they cheap out on bullets. No different from that done with lightly constructed bullets shot thru a 270, 25-06 or 243.

Hi Jerry,

I believe it may have been the bullet that was the culprit... The SST is not a very solid bullet and has a tendency to kinda fragment lots on impact. Plus it does lot's of meat damage. My daughter shot a mule deer with a 140 grain SST driven not too fast in a Swede. Dead deer but lot's of gellied flesh.

I believe that a stronger bullet would cure the problem you had. I plan on using Barnes TTSX's in it, should compensate for higher velocities.

It ain't a myth it's a legand...........................lightning bolt of death.................Harold

LOL, almost. I've had a couple 270's. I sold both and regretted selling one of them, the other was a Ruger 77 mk II with a 6 or 7 lbs trigger :(.

I got the magnum virus and have had alot of rifles since. I would say the 270 is about perfect for WT deer and I've never tested in on Moose or Elk. I'm not 100% convinced it is an Elk rifle, but I tend to want anything I hunt to be really dead and not require tracking. It is likely heavy enough.

I've got a 280 now and it's a great round too, but pretty much a handloader's number. I'd take a good 270 Ruger 77 tang safety or pre 64 win M70 in a heartbeat if I could afford it.

lol, Ultra mag and cheap bullets.

How bout 30-378 wby with a Speer 180 grn hotcor(not recommended over 3000FPS) @ 3500FPS MV. Full jacket seperation and only found 26.7grns of copper jacket under the off sider shoulder blade and then removed 15-20lbs of meat due to blood being blasted thro it. I kinda hoped it would just penetrate and exit, no dice.

just sold a 270 Win today and waiting for word on another one...have a feeling it's sold too....what's so great about a 270 Win?...now a 280 Rem...there's a cartridge a guy can like...:D..let the flames begin.....now where's that fireproof suit..?:p

There are no flies on the 270. It's not as versatile as the true King of course, but they certainly do work. Today's excellent bullets make them all the better.

The 270 just plain works!! I own a beautiful stocked 700 CDL in 270, and with the 140 Accubond at 3050, it is deadly accurate. I credit my longest shot to this rifle [mule deer, no way to get closer, ranged with perfect conditions prevailing] Nothing has ever walked away after being shot with any 270 I have owned. It is a true classic, and those who have actually used it, generally acknowledge it's versatility. Regards, Eagleye.
