The new SAVAGE "EDGE

I highly suggest you guys get the Stevens, it is by far a better choice. Unless of course your buying a dedicated hunting rifle and are not going to sell it then it doesn't matter at all, just get whatever features you want.

It'd be a dedicated hunting rifle, that would not get sold unless I buy something fancier down the road.

Why do you suggested the stevens over it?

The newer Stevens actions are made from solid bar stock and have the front half trued. The Edge is cast and have a huge notch taken out of the front of the action. The detachable mag is nice but the stock is of the same flexibility. I haven't inspected one but those that did and know Savage usually say they would take a Stevens instead. No after market parts yet either.

Here is a review with some pics. http://www.gunblast.com/Savage-Edge243.htm

Yea, after considering it, I'll stick with my original plan of getting a stevens 200.
After a year, if the Edge is still around and in favour, I'll reconsider getting one again.

One of each couldn't hurt :p

When a Stevens 200 is "too expensive!?" and you have to make this hideous polished turd, you know you're slowly spinning down the toilet. You'd think the Remington 710/770 and Mossberg 4x4 experience would keep your nose as far away as possible from such crap.

These new fangled so-called modern designs leave much to be desired. It looks like someone took a traditional design and added shapes, curves and lines where there not supposed to be. It's kind of like someone smoked crack and played with a CAD software to come up with this deformity.)

I see the older used guns in the EE going up in value. Anybody with an eye for workmanship and quality of the past, will easily see that.

Good luck Savage. Never thought "Savage" and "Garbage" would be in the same sentence. Who's running the marketing department there? If you want to try and float a "lead balloon", do it without anyone knowing it came from you because your name and reputation is real difficult to get back once it's tarnished. Dumb move.

Just finished putting a Boyds thumbhole on an old 1980's 110 in 7mm-08.

So let me know if you need my mailing addy for that rifles new home. :D

I have handled all of the above and never got the impression that Savage was crap, mind you I have yet to handle this new rifle.
BTW I don't think these rifles are cheap...I'm simply working poor.

The EE is more like a gunshow for un realistic pricing...case in point many of the savages in there that are used and priced almost the same as new ones minus the tax.

This rifle might fit the bill for me. I am on the look out for a decent priced .223 with a detachable mag for varmit hunting that isn't going to break the bank. This looks like a neat little rifle that will be under $500 as a total package once I mount a decent scope on it. I don't mind the look of it and if it's a decent shooter as the reviews say I will be sold.

I dunno. It looks horrible. The Stevens at least has some pretty reasonable lines. Still think the Marlin is much nicer looking than both, and that plays a role in the over-the-counter wow factor. No one wants to be the guy in deer camp with an ugly gun.

At least if its targeted at the new shooter demographic they did the world a favor and dropped the magnums.

I have defended Stevens 200 as a "good" gun among the entry level hunting rifles and I still stand by it. But in all fairness, honest to goodness, there is no hunting rifle uglier than Stevens in dark green synthetic.

See I have never understood this...

It sounds like something women do...stand around and compare personal items and clothing and such.

After a week in the woods hunting everyone in the camp looks and probably smells like crap anyway. :D

despite the fuglyness....Id have to consider it if cheap enough other wise there isn't much reason to look past a stevens 200 for a cheap rifle.

I could use a pencil barrel 22-250 that I would have little regard for...could be a candidate for Ackley improved chamber.

Does that action not look like a Savage 340? The height of the tang on the grip looks about 1/4" too low. Would that make the comb low compared to the receiver?
I almost went the MS7 route which is a great bunch of features for a few bucks more than that Edge. Research that Marlin, you'll see what I mean. (Fluted bolt, barrel nut and floating bolt head for dead-on headspacing, adjustable accutrigger, half decent stock and blueing, good recoil pad, scope base.) How many features did I just list that the edge doesn't have? Oh, and you can get a camo stocked version for a few bucks more too. If it had a detachable clip or a drop plate for that money it couldn't be beat. (I should be working for them.) I wound up getting a great Ruger stainless synthetic 243 with the scalloped stock from Del Selins for even less than the MS7 cost. That was a tough decision but it was stainless. I have to say there were some great buys there. And I have to agree, sometimes this EE is only slightly less than buying new. Rifle prices have been on a bit of a roller coaster for a number of years along with our dollar. That hasn't helped.
