The New Winchester Model 71s Are Finally Here!

Slooshark1 that is a beautiful rifle. I own a Browning 1886 (no tang safety). It has a very slick action and is a good shooter to boot! Congrats on your purchase.

Well, I caved. Here she is boys!

I just dusted off the old Mastercard and phoned Epps. She's on her way. I can hardly wait to smell the cosmolene.

Sweet. I may have to do the same thing with my VISA.

OMG that's too funny. I just checked the Epps website and it shows it as being sold. I just checked here to see if it was a CGNer that took it and I was right. I'm not sure how many more Deluxes we'll see rolling in before they go extinct again. Ramakkos was supposed to have some coming in here in Sudbury but he said that Winchester didn't end up getting his order for the Deluxes.

I've had this rifle on order with Prophet River since the news was released that they were making them. When I read your post last night, I couldnt wait for Elwoods to open in the morning and scoop it up. I hope my wood is as nice as yours.

Not sure if I should shoot it or tie-wrap the lever and hammer and just sneak a peak at it from time to time. My precioussssss......

I'll give you a range report as soon as I'll be able to try my new 71 Standard. Are some of you guys are kind enought to give me some of you best loads with Hornady 200gr??? (RL-15, IMR4350...)
Thanks,
A new guy in the 71 club!

With the Hornady 200gr FP, a couple of the loads I use are;
-59.4gr of IMR 4350
-63.4gr of IMR 4320
-W-W cases and CCI 200 primers.
I did have a two boxes of 200gr Winchester Silvertips that I traded to another gentleman on site, who also 'joined the club' recently.

I might know that gentleman ;)

So far I have the 200g Silvertips shooting very good using 51g of IMR3031 and will leave it at that. Using the 200g Hornady's, 50g of IMR3031 seems to be the sweet spot, tried IMR4895 and H4831 but this rifle seems to prefer the 3031 with the 200g bullets as far as accuracy goes. I will run these over the chronograph in the next few weeks and see where they come in at but it doesn't really matter, these loads will do what I want of them.

Right now I am trying the 220g Barnes originals using IMR4350, 56-56.5g seems to be pretty decent so far and will give them one more run this weekend. Went higher but ran into some pretty tight extractions.

All the above loads are using WLR primers.

I'm pretty sure the 458 Winchester would decintegrate both the rifle and the shooter. The 71 action is strong but not that strong. Perhaps a new calibre like the 50 Alaskan or a 375-348 AI would up the cool factor.
I've reloaded well into 458 Win territory on my custom 1886 in the past. I would not say it's impossible, but I think it might take some serious study before venturing into that area commercially. Heavy loads have not damaged my rifle pressure wise, but the recoil has taken it's toll. I've had to replace the hammer when that broke, and the pin that holds the tube mag has sheared a couple of times.
450 Marlin would be no issue pressure wise.

BTW I no longer use those heavy loads. Too hard on the rifle, and me!

I fully agree with those that hate the tang safety, and the rebounding hammer, however, they are much much better than the cross bolt monstrosity featured on competing brands, at least from an aesthetics standpoint.
If I had the extra change I'd own one. I had the oportunity to examine one closely down in Vegas when they were still fairly new on the market, and was very impressed with the fit/finish, and overall apparent quality of the rifle.

Same here. I'd be hard pressed trying to justify use of the 220's and 250's for use on our;) Island 'Monster' bucks. I'll keep them for intro to Mr. Moose in future:redface:.

I have never been good at keeping guns unfired. I would like to be able to, but I just don't have the will power to leave something like that unused. I can't say for sure that I would drag it around in a canoe, though. Either way, I can't wait for it to come in.
