The next custom an Oberndorf M98: What to chamber it in?

What to chamber the Oberndorf in?

Another nice cartridge for that length of action would be a 30-338 or a straight up 308 Norma. The 300 win mag is often touted as being the most versatile cartridge for North America and both these cartridges are ballistically the same.

Haven’t read through the thread, but immediately noticed lack of .404 Jeffery in the poll. And Holland & Holland’s Super .30

Not having added the .404 is my one regret in the poll list.

Making the lower receiver lug weaker to extend the magazine is foolish in the long run.
Mauser 98 hardly accepts reg magnum cartridges like 338 Win Mag never mind 404 Jeffry,460 Wby 450 Rigby and such.
It is hard to make fast follow up shots in light rifle chambered in heavy 40cal or 45cal big magnum cartridge IMHO.
Conclusion ?
To accommodate all those conditions and all your desires there is the only one first choice....
----375 Taylor----
My second choice would be 358 NM.

Fair arguments, though many, many a .404 and the proper .375 has been built on the standard M98 by organizations far more informed than ourselves. Heck the most famous .416 Rigby is a standard M98, though .416 Rigby is further than my comfort zone in the 98.

As for recoil, .375 H&H, .404, .458 Win are still totally reasonable in 8lb and up rifles and nothing to get excited about, little different than a 7lb .30-06 for follow up. A light .450 Rigby or .505 Gibbs, are different, and shot plenty of each.

I fondly remember shooting a friends 416 Rigby.....on an INDOOR range.
On the sixth shot half the fluorescent light tubes decide to eject themselves from their fixtures.
It was like the "Quickening scenes" from Highlander, when a rival immortal was killed.

Took some time for us to sweep the floor, but worth it.

We had a cart with it's own sandbox with 3/4" hardened steel plate that could be angled to about 45° on chains. Cart work well.
Blast was another story.

To me an English-style stalking rifle with a cocking piece mounted peep is only suited for a .318 W-R or a .275 Rigby out of the cartridges listed, but I second the vote for a .404 Jeff!

And I remember that rifle kicked like a mule... ah, those were the days!

I voted for the 375 H&H... because there were no 300 H&H

Those organizations can re heat treading the bolts and receivers, magna flux them, x ray them etc far beyond abilities even the skill full rifle builder....
Again the recoil isn't the issue here the fast follow up shots are more important, muzzle raise has everything to do with it.
If I were you I would keep that cool looking octagonal barrel and would send it for re boring to .375 cal if the barrel thickness allows it.
IMHO anything less than 375 Taylor or 358 NM would be wasting good opportunity here.
GR8 2c worth....

Done correctly, you don’t remove all that much to stretch an M98 magazine the fraction required to house the H&H. Bottom metal abounds for a .375 length M98. I do know you know your guns, so all conversational here.

Fast follow ups and big rifles are my sport. It’s in my personal interests, rather a selfish fixation of self preservation. Playing with the .375 H&H, .450 Rigby, .470 Nitro, and a light .505 Gibbs with a camera on my head. Other than the light .450 Rigby “carbine”, all are just as fast as an ‘06.

Why ruin a good .375 H&H case by necking it to .35 and making things difficult! :d The .375 bullets, like the AccuBond and CEB LR, and TTSX all ballistically outperform the .358 (and 9.3) options. And it remains dangerous game legal, ammo is off the shelf and readily available worldwide... I’m a .375 H&H groupie for life, it’s served me too well on too many scary things. .

There's always something bigger, faster, newer, older, more better, but the 350 is plain cool............. Sounds like you're stuck on the 375magnum. :)

Perhaps give some consideration to ;) 'expanding' that groupie category with a small touch of variety. A 375CT :) .

Hate to admit this. But if I was after an “alternative” .375 to the proper one would be the Ruger.

I went through the same debate a while ago with a zg47. I ended with a 375 ruger...its meant for a standard length action and with some duane weibe bottom metal, it's a 4 + 1 gun. Its still at the smith but should be ready soon!

Agreed. The only thing holding me back on that as an option was/is :( the mindless rhetoric  and rants of one individual on site and that of his 'pet rock', concerning the 375Ruger. That was the deciding factor for my choice of acquiring a custom 375CT from another site member, Super Cub. And, ;) no regrets on my choice :d.
