If we look back 100 years and trace the history of cartridge developement, we can see the demise of several good cartridges within a few years or decades of the introduction of something "better". Note the .250-3000 and .257 Roberts, and the effect the introduction of the .243 win., 6mm Rem and 25-06 Rem. Or the fate of the .300 Savage after the .308 Win was introduced. The .358 was a "better" version of the .348 Win, although the latter isn't exactly burning up the sales charts these days.

So then, anyone have any fearless predictions about what is next to go? Will the introduction of the .270 WSM (arguably the best of the line) spell the end of the .270 Win.? Or will some cartridges go the way of the dodo due to regulation, kind of like in Africa when the .45 calibers were prohibited?

Sorry Bigredd, but I think maybe the .223 WSSM (especially since the .204 Ruger came out) will be the next to go.

In the future,
Only the 270WSM will survive the "short mag" thing. WSSM's will stay
The .260 will be gone
The .204 will enjoy modest appreciation
and........(make some popcorn boys).....the 30-06 will reign supreme.

obsolete cartridge

Hopefully the next obsolete cartridge will be something in the WSM line, sooner or later the "noobies" will realize that the 30-06 is king and will be around after their pet super duper short mag has bit the dust.:p The 270 Win, .308. Win, 30-06 Springfield, 7mm mag, .338 Win mag, 30-30 Win, .243 Win. 7x57 Mauser and the 8x57 Mauser will be here taking game when the WSM is nothing but a faded memory in some old farts brain.

Remington has already discontinued many of the rifles being chambered in the SAUM cartridges, no loss mine you. I truly doubt that the mainstays of the gun world will be affected. 308,270,06,7 Rem 300 Win 338Win etc will never die I believe. Also the 257 Roberts following while small is devout, I can't see it's demise in the near future.

Never really been all that interested in the "short mags" and have to agree that the SAUM is probably doomed to dissappear very soon. I predict that the WSM's will be with us for a while yet, and I think the 7mm version will be the first to go from that line. The RUM's could vanish as well, and the 7mm will be the first from that line as well.

The .260 will be gone

Oh brother!

This cartridge slowly but surely is getting more and more popular. Not rapidly gaining but that's a sure sign that it's going to be around for a long time. Not like many of the flash in the pan cartridges that have been coming out.

obsolete

I think the next one will have to go would be the clunky .260 Remington because the 6.5x55 is better and older.:p And I think the 7mm-08 should go by way of the dodo bird because the 7x57 Mauser is better and older. But more than likely the 7mm -08 will hang around for a while.

I cant see the SAUM's & the WSSM's sticking around for long. I also think that there have been far too many WSM rifles sold to cause the calibers to become obsolete - with the exception of the 7mmWSM.

While I would never expect the 30-06 to become obsolete - I do find it to be an exceptionally boring caliber.

While it may be boring to some it has proven itself over and over again. I personally feel that all guns get boring after time after one has mastered it. Yes, I do feel that a gun and load can be mastered. The only thing that stops it from being boring is the love of shooting. What is boring is the reloading process.;) ;) ;)

as long as there is reloaders no cartridge will be obsolete. the wsm will survive but the rsum will be history in a couple of years.

I don't think they will be missed though at all. Too many introductions in too short of a time frame something has to fall by the wayside if is the SAUM's so be it.

My, what a long list. Start with anything that has Remingtons name tied to it, the 8mm Rem Mag was the only good thing they ever did.
Then add in the goofy rounds, like the 300 and 303 Savage, I mean total banishment, even guys like Supercub will stop using them. The 444 thats gone, the. 303 Brit (hopefully), and I would say the 30-30, but if 72 Ford Pintos teach us anything, its that rubes will buy anything.
The 7mm-08, the 260, the 280, gone, give them time. I pray for thier end every day.
There are a lot of middle of the road rounds, like the 303 Brit, that at times struggle to survive, and as such they will last a little longer.
30-06 could stand to be put out to pasture, and the 270 with it. If you want a good round we have the 308. Oh the 7mm Mag, nuke that to, we have a 300 mag instead.
But the first to go, if history teaches us anything, will be Remingtons craptacular rounds....which is funny, cuz thier craptacular guns are still here.

obseletes

Hi, I believe all the exotic calibres will die a very slow but sure death. SAUM's, RUM's WSM's and WSSM's. There is a reason that the old faithfuls endure....... they work and won't break your piggy bank.

All the new "improved" cartridges are like raising ostriches, deer and buffalo as compared to beef. Sure you'll talk some fellows into buying them at an inflated price but really, how does an ostrich burger taste :D :D :D

Long live the .243 .308, 7mm mag and 8mm mag (OK the last one is not so popular, but I'd have to be stone cold before I ever sold mine :) )

Arch:cool:
