The next obsolete cartridge...

On my list of impending obsolecense: All of the WSSM's, all of the SAUM's, 7WSM, perhaps the .300WSM but I could be wrong. I think the .270WSM will stick around or at least I hope so. The .450 Marlin, .308 Marlin Express, .338 RCM, .338 Fed and .375 Ruger.

we will have obsolecence for the same reason we have a new ones-
[a]gun writers have to come up with new columns every month and
guys still think if they only had a new one they would hit what they are shooting at
tell me it ain't so-reminds me of what my father said to me almost 45 years ago when I asked him if a certain rifle could kill a deer-''yes-if you hold it straight''
what I never fail to get a chuckle at is guys poo pooing some old cartridges as ''short range-only good for under 200 yards''WHEN THEY CAN'T HIT ANYTHING ANY FARTHER ANYWAY!

Not too long after the 308 Winchester came on the civilian market, a well known gun writer of the day stated this marked the end of the 30-06.
He had a page rigged up like a funeral notice, with all the trimmings, for the 30-06.
But, as we know, writers have to have something to write about and it sold copies for him and caused a controversity.

Ironic, but I know of few genuine writers. The internet has brought the great un washed the information they crave and journalists are paid to lie.

The great explorers, hunters, narrators like Tom Creane, Wilfred Thesiger, Jack London have no modern day counter parts.

Why do I care? The 30-06 has outlived the best.

My post above is absolute bollocks. Those three guys have left enough behind to encourage any young lad or lass to explore life.

I'l get me coat.

Never bought one of the weird WSSMs etc. However I did spend a lot of time playing with a new(to me) toy- Winchesters Ballistics Comparison. Whoa that was a lot of fun but it opened my eyes too. So many cartridges with the same boolit were effin near right on despite the arguments for or against. Yes the 308 and 30-06 are close but I reload so that stops right there. But after all is said and done I still shoot a 38-55 and can buy ammo for that and the 300Savage at Reliable today if they were open. So if performance is so important then why is the lowly 38-55 still around? Surely an old bugger like that should be pushing up daisies. I suppose a lot of the reason for survivial is most of us old farts like to buy good used stuff to save much on the cash side. Then again a lot of us buy what we know comfortably. 308 and 30-06 are very much in the comfort zone. However to get an idea of what is still in fashion-go have a look at the Winchester Ballistics machine and see what cals are NOT there listed for you to compare. Think thats a hint?

Might be the good old 303 next to become a thing of the past.

Well if the ammunition industry was dependant on Canadians needs, I'd say there were a few too many LEs around to worry about the 303 going anywhere soon.

Anybody know how popular the 303 is in the US?

I can't speak for Remington Ultra Mags or Winchester Super Looper Pooper Ultra Mini Maxi Whatchamagoogles, but I KNOW the 303brit, 308win, 30-06, 17hmr, and the 204rug are all going to disappear any minute!

Ya... just like we ran out of oil in the 1970's, uh well... it was gonna be in the 80's I guess uh, well soon anyways, and acid rain ate all the trees back in the 80's... or fish, or whatever its target was, and the new milenium brought mass chaos and the end to all things... like running water.....

WHATEVER:rolleyes:

I'm pretty sure the five I listed WILL last... well, long enough for Global Warming to kill us all anyways. :p

Anyone know a good caliber to kill this thread?

An easy way to tell what cartridges will survive is go to Canadian tire and see what they stock. That's what will be left around.
.22lr

6.5x55

There were somewhere on the order of 17 million .303 rifles built according to the documentary of the 10 best rifles ever. They will be around for a while yet. Also don't forget about the 7.62x54r and of course the 7.62x39. ;)

If the supply of inexpensive surplus dried up, I'm not sure just exactly how popular either of those cartridges would be. Commercial versions of the X39 would be expensive and I think the novelty would wear off plenty fast. Does anybody besides S&B even load the 54r?

Winchester loads it. (or at least re-labels it)

With all the cheap Russian rifles coming into Canada, IMHO there will be a resurgence in demand for 7.62x54 and 7.62x39. I reload so I don't really care that much either way :p.
