In Canada are more then 100000 SKS for sure. But how many people have them?
For sure not 100000, may be 40000, I have only 6 SKS.

After Moncton shooting the rumours are: all semi auto will be banned or at least restricted. This might turn very fast. That is when we will know for sure how many of those we have (or use to have) in Canada. Sorry for being pessimistic.

Did you actually watch the news? Did you not see the conservative mp interviews leaning on mental health and shooting down more gun control?

Seriously, go tin foil in some other thread where you'll be on topic.

I definitely agree with fenceline. The real issue is the real issue, not the knee jerk band-aid that those who bathe in the blood of the victims and foam at the mouth over it.

Oh, and getting back to the topic at hand....there are more SKS's in Canada than Honda Civics ;)

Sks are great rifles. CFO / RCMP may have a way of estimating the total number. There old WW2 rifle, current USA / CAN military and police have much better tech.

Russian SKS regular production was 49 to 56. WW2 was 39 to 45. Designed and tested in 45, but most are post WW2.

Easy way to tell the numbers.... Look at the import numbers via CBSA. Had to have permits to get them all here.

The numbers of owners will continue to increase for at least a while longer as a couple of local stores still have them at the $200 mark. They're still the best deal for a Centre fire semi-auto.

Hell yeah. Never mind best deal for a semi auto centre fire, it's the best deal for a gun period. Not only is the cost of the firearm very low but so is the cost of ammo.

The only thing that I might consider a better deal is a .22 due to ammo cost, but the sks is big enough for hunting medium game.

I do watch the news, but not only conservative mp interviews as you suggested. And I do see a spin the media is creating out of this and where it goes. BTW in one of those articles I remember they have provided approximate SKS statistics, as an example of how easy it to get, how many Canadians are armed with semi and how dangerous is that. It was close to 200000. Could be BS, though. Sorry, cannot find a link, and I run my browser in Private mode, so no history.

Well considering making semi autos "banned or restricted" would require a rewrite of the firearms act, or orders in council, which even the liberals were too scared to try in the later years of their last power hold, I wouldn't put too much faith in those rumors, which you are continuing to spread.

The conservatives are in power, so for any short term, your rumors are rumors. And no more. No matter what is said in the media.

Yeah, I also did not believe rumors when was looking to buy CZ-858 a year ago. Lucky I did not buy 858 back then.
Looks like they give the official numbers only after something turns prohib. And there you go: now the Canada Border Services Agency estimates more than 8 700 CZ858 were imported in Canada. What a nice way to know the numbers!

Knowing the numbers imported is only half the battle though.

Even if you know how many were imported, you dont really know how many are still in existence.

The cz858 is not a very good comparison because they were new guns imported recently. Many SKSs have been around for quite some time, while many others have been torn down for parts, destroyed by Bubba, ect.

If you are going to be pessimistic, don't apologize for it. Just understand that you've decided to go without in advance of some one maybe, and that is maybe, denying you something in the future.

Maybe you could not buy junk food. Some one may ban it one day. No sense experiencing it before then.

The reason why I was looking into this thread is to get the answer on that very same question. I just needed to estimate how secure is to posses the SKS giving the current trends, where without rewriting firearm act they slowly eat into the pool of non-restricted semiauto models by prohibiting some selected ones time to time. And this is no rumor. When the number of affected owners is comparably small, there won't be much of the hype. This time may be about 10000 owners were affected altogether (Swiss Arms and 858). And that went through just fine, right? Their tactics works. SKS owners number could be 50000 at most (I guess). So seems like a big chunk to bite, is it? I'm specifically looking into some customized SKS worth of $500-600, but I hesitate to invest into something which might have pretty good chances to be turned into paperweight or be delivered to RCMP for free.

Thanks for your inputs.
