So I can only image that it was an armourer modification...along with mountains of paperwork. :D
I would have to have a look again but I do not recall seeing anything about them in any of the books I have. Maybe someone else can confirm seeing a record of these alterations.
 
Kulak is Russian for a 'fist' and is a nick name for a better off peasant.
'Obrez' is russian for a 'sawed-off'. There is no direct connection, it is incorrect to say that kulak's weapon of choice was obrez, as not every kulak was offering armed resistance to the bolsheviks. Obrez was a niche weapon used instead of a pistol whenever someone need concealed carry weapon. The same kulaks used full wood MNs for long distance shots.
