The Official MDT Tac 21 Thread!!!!! (56k Death!!!)

Hi guys! Love the Tac21 chassis! I have two questions. How do you remove the bolt to facilitate bore cleaning? Do you have to remove the butt stock or the whole stock? That wouldnt be so convienient! Thanks guys,have fun and straight shoot'in!
 
In the spirit of "better late than never", I have acquired an MDT-21 for my very old Rem 700 action.

A tip for bedding and for trigger pin insertion: short 1/4" UNF bolts with some stand-off washers hold everything in place.

The keeper pins that came with my kit were too long, so installing the trigger took some time and third-hand assistance to hold everything in place. If anyone has some correctly-sized keepers pins they are willing to part with, please PM me.

Speaking of bedding, while it isn't "necessary" (you can see from the first pic that the front of the receiver is straddled by the chassis in a "v" fashion - notice where the bedding is thin at the edges), it can't hurt to relieve action stress and create a perfect fit for the recoil lug. I used machinist's dye to pre-check the lug / chassis fit - good, but not perfect. Bedding changes that.

What you can't see in the above shot is dremel-marks on the lower part of the safety cutout. My very-old safety interfered with the cutout, so off came a few thous of material and voila, fits fine.

And the range results. This is a load I used pre-MDT (and pre-brake), so there may be some development to do yet - it shot fairly well, but of course I am showing off the best group of the day. Five shots went downrange, so two are buried somewhere, but they're there.

Some thoughts:
  • if you are considering a brake, get one. I had given up on the .308 due to arthritis - with this brake, I can shoot it prone with a metal butt plate in relative comfort. With a Decelerator Slip-On Recoil Pad (not pictured, but a near-perfect fit on the Troy stock), my collar bone is unaffected.
  • the Battle Ax stock, as expected, had the perfect angle to slide in my rear bag. I put some teflon tape on for the range trip, but it wasn't truly required.
  • while the "default" choice for this chassis is the PRS stock, the Battle Ax is quick-adjustable and "good enough"; the cheekweld is okay, although I may put a 1/4 riser on it to make it just right.
  • I have and tried a MIAD... but the old standby A2 grip worked fine so I left it on. For a pure target gun a palm shelf is nice... I expect to be doing some sniper shoots and moving around is easier without the palm shelf.
  • As others have noted, the chassis is really well-made. Everything fits together just-so. The heli-coil inserts for the fore-end bolts are a nice touch.
  • several people have asked about the brake. It is very effective, made by Roedale, and is a clamp-on type (Roedale makes threaded versions as well) - http://www.webshop.roedale.de/index.php?cat=c89_Muzzle-Brakes.html&language=en

Anyone running/have a folding setup on one of these yet?

Also, what are the basic parts you need to make a full stock.

folder is in the works Rumour has it, all you get is the three piece chassis add any AR stock,grip you want throw in your Rem 700 and but some AICS mags and off to the rodeo
 
This is potentially a stupid question (sorry). After looking through the thread(s) and trying to make out pictures, I'm just looking for confirmation:

Is the serial number on the 700 receiver / action still visible when it is inside the Tac 21 chassis? Or is some disassembly required to view it?

It looks like there is a window / port on the left of the chassis, about where the serial would be, but some pics are a little blurry to make it out.

I wish they would have not used Magpul rails the thoughts of mounting my 16lb gun on a tripod with a plastic rail scares me to high hell(MDT if you read this make some real rails please!)


Options I would like to see folder MDT made! longer front rail or a add on section

well when I first say it in pictures it really did not do it for me,then I saw it mounted at Epps and handles it I was wowed


I put this chassis up in the ranks of all the top makers! what is not to like? and Canadian made!
 
Wow, I like that, that pic is going on our website if that is OK with you Jamie. And we do make the Rails, three lengths 6.5 inch, 5.0 inch and a 3.8 inch picatiny rail. the first two have the flush cup sling mounts. :)

where do I get the rails? I need one for the bottom and one with the cups for the side:D
