every one you talk to about deer hunting this year, they all have the same thing to say...... had a great time but the hunting sucked..
me i think its it was just to damm early for the rut.the deer just were not moving during the day..
our camp was of 3 hunters this year, from the sounds of all we were luck to get at least one deer..
so whats your thoughts and ideas as to why the harvested deer numbers are down?

I guess it all depends on where you hunt. My sis and i are hunting on the same land and both got our bucks. On the other hand my buddies who are both hunting on the same but different land, farter from the states (in the eastern townships QC) didnt see sh**....

Yup same thing for me Quinte Outdoor Sports runs a big buck contest last year they had 45+ entry's by now including bow season.....this season they have maybe 5 on the board and more ticket sales this year then last....Coyotes are a huge problem my property is covered with fresh tracks and scat.....our neighbors corn is still on the field as well and coupled with warm temps the deer just don't seem to be moving during twilight hours.

Hope things get better for muzzleloader season as well!

My buddy's camp was skunked (week 1, north of Bon Echo area)... lots of sign. They too figure it was too warm.
Should hear from my b.i.l. (week 2 of deer, last week of moose, west arm of French River). The last few years have seen 0 deer, and only the odd moose.
I'm leaving Thursday for four days (central Michigan)... hoping I won't have to add to this thread. ;)

Where did you hunt?

Some places in Ontario have lots of deer (e.g. SW Ont Controlled Zones) and other places are down to perhaps 25% of what there were 2-3 years ago (e.g. SE Ont). Up here harsh winters (deep snow) and a coyote epidemic have both caused increased winter kill and high mortality of new-born fawns.

I thought the weather has been good - better than in several of the last few years, near freezing, and we hit a full moon practically on opening day.

I would attribute it to fewer deer, not the weather.

I'm gonna use several reasons ....

1. We've just gone through two of the hardest winters in a loooong time. Not many deer around.

2. No doe tag. Bucks only.

3. I only got to hunt one of the four week deer season.

4. I really don't care if I shoot a deer, so I didn't try that hard.

5. 375 Chatfield/Taylor wasn't enough for the deer we have here.

.

We limited our harvest this year because we just plain had to much venny last year. Several of the older members went on a volunteer bucks only or bucks & fawns only to limit our hunt. We still ended up with 9 deer for 12 guys, 5 bucks, 3 fawns & one doe. Our sightings may have been down slightly but we do have a wolf/coyote infestation that needs to be dealt with!

It doesn't bother me if I get a deer or not, I just like to walk around and sneak up on them. However...

I blew one shot when I came out and quickly got ready for the shot only to have them stand, offer the perfect shot and my safety was on. That's all it took and they were gone. I passed on another shot on Wednesday. I enjoy the hunt, not so much the kill. It was still a great season, so far...

Our camp got a buck and doe in the first week. I missed my doe in the second week and we only saw one other deer in the second week..

Can't offer an excuse. I just missed at about 40 yards.

Me and buddy decided to Buck hunt only. Saw plenty of does and fawns, but no bucks. Made the best of the outdoors the fawns and does entertained us by giving us hope, everytime they looked back into the woods, the hopes of a big buck would be forthcoming.

Hopefully better luck on the control hunt in two weeks.

Too warm. It is just too warm. And it supposed to be warm all week too. That and the alfalfa field got cultivated so the deer are not moving my way now, so I have to change things up at the last moment.

I still have 2 weeks left so I am far from done. But I have hardly seen anything. Which is a different story from when that alfalfa field was still around. I counted 21 deer one night 2 weeks ago. Including a monster which I couldn't shoot as I don't own a muzzle-loader.

I didn't get any deer because I'm the puncher.
My uncle got a buck and a doe , on the same watch, at the same time.
Some people just have the luck I guess.
Thats all the deer we saw all week.
I could have shot a moose on the Tuesday though.
Too bad season was closed on them.
