Just saw a video on CNN of Haitian cops going after looters. One of the coppers had an M14. Did the Yanks give some to Pappa Doc in the 60's?

I think they gave them to anyone who wasn't aligned with the Soviets for quite a few years after it was withdrawn from from line service in late 60's/early 70's.

When I was in Haiti back in 1978 the police & military (hard to tell them apart) were carrying M1 Garands. Their military was pretty pathetic. You could see the history of the airforce by looking at the wrecked planes pushed back into the trees along the edge of the Port au Prince airport. They even had a navy of sorts. I recall a minesweeper settled on the bottom of the harbour with the crew running up flags, doing drills, etc.
Haiti was about the most miserable place I've ever seen; heavy with the stench of poverty and squalid living conditions-and things have'nt changed at all.

See, this is why I don't give a good god-damn about the Haitian issue right now - because survivors are stealing PLAYING CARDS from a LITTLE KID. If they were stealing food, or stealing water, then I'd say there's some hope there... but this place was like that BEFORE the quake, and it will be like that AFTER.

Festering bunghole of the Caribbean, IMO. Not a cent of my personal money will go to any of those idiots.

I think your missing the picture this 10yr old is now an orphane living on his own trying to make enaugh money to buy some food...that to me is real sad to see, and thats why they need our help. Because someone steals his cards doesn't mean they all should suffer.

:agree:

We have our own problems that should be fixed before bothering with other nations problems (IMO).

You're DAMN right.

A nation that's done nothing to help itself in the past 50 years, and whose people show no interest in raising themselves out of the mudhole they're in... well, my money's better spent helping teach a little CANADIAN-BORN child to read in CANADA where they might grow up properly and become of some benefit to the world.

Before US went into Haiti back in the 90's, US army intel did a study and concluded Haiti could supply no more than 40 rounds of 30-06s to every soldier and police on the island. It was a walk in the park when USMC landed on D Day.

I had the chance to visit the Armory in the National palace basement when I was living there in 97.
Some pretty keen stuff, not all in good state, but nice
M-14
M-1 Garand
M-1 Carbine
.30 Cal GPMG
.50 Cal

Not that much munition....
With what happened to the Palace, I wonder what happened to all these weapons

I agree , people have to want to help themselves and it seems like they just want us to come in and "save" them.

I have a feeling that these would have been handed out like proverbial candy in the carribean as well as central/south America as a knee-jerk reaction to Castro taking power in Cuba.

Baby Doc's body guards had Uzi & M79. Haiti also had an assortments of towed AAA & some anti tank rocket launchers but very little ammo.

Yeah, forgot the UZI, Close protection details (both US DOS and LNs) in 97 had them issued. Some of them were in doutbful state (lots of rust). I don't think that the country kept anything above 12.7mm after the army was disbanded.

If you feed a wild animal to much they die when you quite feeding them, the same goes for everyone in Haiti. It's not politicaly correct but let the stong survive and the weak die off and maybe the country can support the smaller population.

Sad part is, we already welcome them in Montreal, instead of finding home and food to our homeless.... my 2 cent...

So you want to see a program that eliminates (bans) homelessness and hunger? What would that program look like? How do you enforce it when a majority of the homeless choose to be homeless? It's like banning crime lol. Good luck on that. There is always an effort to house and feed the homeless, the need however will always be greater than the offer......because we should not encourage homelessness.

Let them find peace and prosperity in their own country and let there be a way for them to come here to prosper as well.
