The reality of the new Magnums!

Nothing plain jane about a .338WM J/C... it is one of the hardest hitting and longest reaching magnums out there. There was a day when it was one of the new fangled hot rods... I believe it was introduced in 1958 and there was a lot of controversy around it at the time.

That's about right. Lotsa folks couldn't see the need for it.
But, as word of it's moose hunting prowess spread, it grew. I've even heard it proclaimed as GCC {God's Chosen Cartridge} on one of the American boards.
It found a niche.
Question is, can the new ones do the same? It took the 338WM a good 15 years or so to really catch on.

Ask yourself something though. Is throat erosion and reduced barrel life really a worthwhile tradeoff for the little extra velocity the new short magnums offer?

Ah yes reduced barrel life, and throat errosion. And how many rounds would that be?
True, there are guys here that shoot that many, and could accomplish the big burn out, but, I'm thinking that for many, it's not a concern. The second owner... well that's his problem.

The so called throat erosion issues with the Short Magnums has been grossly exaggerated to say the least. The truth is that the WSM's are not of any significant degree any more prone to throat erosion that the standard versions and usually less prone to throat erosion than the belted magnum versions.

Throat erosion is largely a misunderstood thing.
The 7mag, 3000 mag, 264 mag for example ,can all be worn out as fast or faster than the new magnums, if used improperly.
Every barrel will erode, but on a hunting rifle it is not always as noticiabble as on a target rifle.

But then, that's why Ron Smith and other custom barrel dudes are so busy!!:D

I have gone through more than mmy share of barrels in 40 odd years, but am prepared to rebarrel if thhe accurcay falls ooff because of erosion, or , as sometimes is the case- I want a different cartridge/caliber on the same rifle!

A yes...throat erosion...Here are pics of a 7RM (ballisticlaly identical to 7WSM) using 140gr bullets. This was a load work up, so all the bullets had different powder charges.

First 3:

The rest of the group with 12 or so different charges:

This Ruger has had over 2500 rounds through it. I shoudl get rid of it since the throat is worn:p :p

WSM ---> Why Does It Matter?

Shoot what you like to shoot. Maybe you like the fact that it's different, or you want to experiment with it. Maybe it's just and excuse to buy another rifle. Does it really matter? So a few thousand rifles are sold in the latest cartridge from Fedremchesterady? At the very worst we have that much more persons involved in the sport

This topic has LEGS!

I reckoned when I went away for Christmas that this would be dead and buried - and come back to see FIVE NEW PAGES of stuff.

Hey there Colin, chill out buddy, BR is a really good guy. I have met HIM in person too.........as well as probably three hundred or so other Gun Nutz.......and pretty well all of them are great people!

Happy New Year everybody!

then why do his posts, as quoted above, reflect a trolling arrogant prick?

tis the season ;)

magnums

The reality is that it's nice to have a choice of the rifle and caliber you wish to shoot. I have magnums and non magnums, I don't hate any caliber and especiallly not the WSM line. I see the benefits of both the new mags and the more traditional mag calibers. I have taken a heap of game with both the new and old and do not have a preference but rather I match the gun with the intended game. For me the 7x57 will do for about 95% of all hunting situations and the .338 will take care of the rest. And for the WSM fans you can swap the 7x57 for the 7 WSM and the .338 for a 300 WSM and all is well. The most important thing is to keep trying new things and stop bashing the new stuff before it's been tried.

Right back to the personal attacks Phib... you are the consummate internet tough guy... lots of yapping on line only... what a joke.:p
Don't worry about the mods warning you, I would hate to see you stop making a fool out of yourself like this so my lips are sealed.... it makes my day to see you so jealous of me.;)

I am still waiting for you to post a thread that goes ten pages... wait a minute thats right you haven't got an idea in your head worth discussing! That is the reason you resort to your feeble trolling on my thread.. even though dozens of other Gunnutz see the debate for what it is and use it to comment in a meaningful way. :p

never quit buddy... keep on trolling.... I know you don't see it but thats OK... it is quite enough that everyone else does....:D

[side note] .......it is distressing to see two good guys sniping at each other. Both can bring some very good things to the table.......

But I have to say that this time I do find the comments from amphibious to be unworthy of him.

Let's try to do better eh guys? Can't we all just get along???? THANKS, and maybe you can make this your NY resolution to keep old Uncle Doug happy in his doting old age............

Doug

I agree with you Doug... I would gladly bury the hatchet.
I have never spilled first blood in this stupid feud... but I will never roll over and let somebody sully my reputation. Especially not someone who resorts to personal attacks in the absence of intelligent debate.
Everybody here knows that my quotes used by Phibber were posted in a humorous context... should I let him call me troll and twist my words... I don't think so!

I've met them both too, Doug.

The internet is a wild and crazy place, it's pretty funny to see internet persona vs real life person. It can be hard to know who is really a tough guy and who is a poser on the big ol intraweb...:D

For the record, I am far cooler, tougher and better looking on the ol WWW than I am in person.;)

what a heap of bull#### :D twist what words? those are direct and accurate quotes. you started now you cry "oh he's out to get me with personal attacks" yes Bighead, every one is out to get you. if anyone calls you wrong they are obviously ignorant and attacking you personally. "everyone knows" remember what assumption makes?

go have a look at those quotes and tell me this game isn't being ref'd a little one sidedly.
