When they are chasing down a bear in Terrace they are out with their 12 gauge shotguns with slugs. Locally mostly Black Bears here. Grizzlies are more to the south towards Kitimat. If they can, they try to trap them in town, then shoot the bear later, once they are out of the city.

From what I understand it’s what the BC CO’s carry, iirc one of them killed a wounded grizzly with his 10mm glock a year or two back when the bear attacked him.

They carry the 40cal. They nay have carried the 10MM some time ago but not now. The last 18 years it has been 40cal. I have shot with individual CO's enough over those years at our range and it has been 40 cal Glocks in their holsters. Given the political climate right now I can't imagine the officer in your story using his personally owned 10MM.

9mm can work on brown bear. it is all depending on training, shooting and of course situation. no everybody can shoot properly a 357 or a 44 mag lol ..

I guess any firearm is better than no firearm. If you know how to place a shot I guess caliber is a secondary issue.

Definitely for when the bear spots you and takes cover behind a lvl2 ballistic vest, and you have to over penetrate to get at his boiler goodies.

Interesting, I don’t know why I was under that impression. I re read the article and it doesn’t mention caliber so who knows where I got 10mm from. The attack was in 2018.

Well either caliber are back up calibers at best. The 10 and the .357mag are poor substitutes for a 12 gauge with slugs. Significantly better than either the 9mm or .40. no matter how much training you have.

From what I was told by a reliable source our local police department is going to switch from the 40 to the 9mm , reason the price of ammo. I can shoot a 9mm better than a 40 but I haven't shot a 40 very much . they should have gone up in caliber instead of down . I can shoot a 45 better than a 40 . I was talking to a police constable the other day on a construction site and she was a real sweetheart . she told me that a local police officer had to shoot some Perp several times to stop him recently with a 9mm . now where have I heard that in the news before ? the 45 would have been a better option . cost of ammo ? with what we are paying in taxes nowadays ?

That's horsesh!t imo. Shot placement trumps caliber, especially with the bullets available in today's ammunition available to LE.

I shoot PPC sometimes with a .40 Jericho, accuracy and shot placement is not an issue. I also use 9mm, .38 Special and 1911 in .45. They are different, but one is not really easier to shoot well. If I had to carry, it would be the 9mm CZ clone or the GP100 of those four guns. Size and weight being the big considerations.

But definitely the selection at most stores is pretty sparse. I was able to pick up some Syntech .40 in 165gr I believe. It does seem like 9mm is the standard default for everything now. I can't see the LE issued service weapons flipping back to .40 anytime soon - .40 may eventually be a niche market down the road for the consumer as well.

No issues with our assessment. I am working on developing a load for my GP-100 10MM using 40 cal brass. I will be casting FB 180 gr bullets with GC's to eliminate leading in the area just past the forcing cone. I am just waiting for the mold to arrive. I have been making the GC's for them using pop can aluminum.

BTW if you reload the cost of 40 is no different tan 9MM. If you cast you fall below the cost of .22LR.

Large services like Toronto a have huge budgetary issues and have opted to stay with the Glock 22 40 cal for the time being due to the large cost involved in purchasing and re-issuing a different firearm or calibre. There is also a cost involved with training. Unfortunately its not as easy as giving everyone a newly issued firearm especially if its a different brand or manufacturer. It becomes a service liability issue. There would be a transition course involved.

Thanks for the context, background and colour, Nitroxace. Good to know the .40 is not quite dead everywhere. I have been on the prowl for a .40 PCC but they seem to not be widely available. In the meantime I continue to pick up the ammo where I can find it.

I recall a discussion about 40's in the this very Handgun Forum a while back. For some reason the 'Jack of all trades' is a master of none. 9mm / 38's or 45's always seem to vanquish it.
The guys with big money in 40's are going to be enraged... but doesn't change the history of 40's flashing and then just....fading away...

I've already been seeing that. Demand for 40 is definitely down. Epps had a mountain of 180gr Ranger-T at $14/50. Many on-line dealers seem to have more stock in 40 and at the same or cheaper prices than 9mm.
