The Right Tool: Following up a Wounded Wood Bison bull with a Double Rifle (Article)

Interesting documentary

Acording to video:
- 2000 lbs
- 121"
- Shot behind horn (spine shot?)
- Winchester 94 30-30 @ 90-100 yards

Of course, that's pretty much the only shot you have with a medium hunting caliber.. chest shot would probably turn into a very long chase.

Nice read....any idea how many bison are taken annually by the local First Nations people in that area?

I feel a little uncomfortable guessing in case the figure was ever used negatively, but since nobody really knows for sure and given I average almost half the year living there, I'll guess at saying it's in the neighbourhood of a dozen. That number is increasing however as the popularity increases with them. The herd really isn't that big, so the number is substantial.

I know a guy that got one on LEH in Northern BC, he said even the burger was tough.

Yep those would be the Pink Mtn herd, plains bison that were from a ranching operation that established themselves, as I understand.

I've been hoping for a BC Bison draw for some time now....maybe some day! If I do someday get a draw, it will give me justification to buy myself that 416 remington mag I've been lusting after.

Certainly a fine tool for the job, good luck in the draws!

Just wondering, the video I posted up there, is it considered kind of a bad idea? More of a survival thing, or does it hold any merit? I have zero experience with such huge game. I've seen Moose shot-flop with 30-30 within 50 yards, but I have never seen a bison shot before by any gun other than on youtube.

Still on mobile and haven't viewed it yet to be honest, odds are it's high fence / captive (although doubtless a very large ranch) as that's the only Bison hunting in the US.

Ardent,

States of Wyoming, Montana, Utah and of course Alaska have a program for hunting bison and those ones are not in any ranches ....

all the best.

Having been nearly a victim of a bull that was head shot with a 250gr out of a .338, I find lots of things plausible. He resurrected 10mins + after being shot....

Posted by the man who has obviously never shot a bison, or seen the skull composition of one. :)

The brain is a bit bigger than a grapefruit, the skull the volume of three basketballs. The bone protecting the brain is from two inches to six inches thick.

But, you're right. The brain is in the head.

We all agree they can be very, very tough except for Chuck, and indeed bearkilr has likely put down more than any of us as he ranches Bison. This wounded bull was one of the most amazing things I've seen for toughness and tenacity in game.

Wood Bison is also probably the only species I've hunted I didn't feel any form of ground shrinkage from on approaching, they actually seem even bigger laid out.

Yes, to both points.

I know bearkillr ranches bison, and we all agree they can be tough to put down. He was posting tongue in cheek, and so was I. Now, all we have to do is convince Chuck. ;)

Had not thought of it, but you have brought up a good point. They do get bigger as you walk up to them after they are down.

We all agree they can be very, very tough…...

It seems to be the dead one's that are the toughest. The true definition of pain is getting kicked in the nuts by a 2000 lb bull after a headshot and proper bleeding while he's hanging from a front end loader. :D

Their nerves keep twitching for several minutes after death, more so than most other animals.
