thats a beauty. I love it just the way it is. [I'm partial to open sights]. Great gun, great caliber, should do well for spring bear

I don't like playing the game of "it's gonna hit, but where?"
out past 200yrds. Sadly this would b the case,

The scope will have me better suited for odd coyote, wolf,..whatever..as well as the bigger stuff at more extended ranges than I normally shoot.

The low power will be good as well for the quick shots at close range, and in heavier brush and such.

The sights will be back up..

So what did you do with the 30-30? please don't say you got rid of it or anything.... I thought that rifle was going to be put into your coffin with you, you know when.......... How was the move and his is eveything in Alberta?

Derek

shhhhhh......

The 7mm-08 only comes out while the 30/30 is sleeping or otherwise occupied :D

The move was good, but only me left me with 2 weeks huntng when I gi=ot here, and the birds were already moved on.

Managed 4 deer though

which part specifically?

The unnecessarily short barrel and the weird front sight. To me a 7mm-08 isn't a "brush buster" it's a nice little cartridge, why make it's performance less than ideal by shortening the barrel. Assumming that then it's a scope rifle, so why the strange sight?

I would just buy a normal A11 in 7-08 and to me it would be a superior package, and FWIW you are undersoping the rifle with a 1.5x5 Leupold. I could hit foot sized rocks at 500 metres with the 7-08's cousin the 260 remington. That cartridge if you mate it with the right bullet and load is a great longrange shooter, so why try and take that part of it's performance away

My 2 cents.

That's the advantage of a rifle/cartridge combo like that. It works very well as a bush gun, but still has it for longer shots. It would handle very well to boot.

Think 160s or 175s for moose hunting or 120s or 140s for longer ranges. It would be a very nice compromise either way. Other than the sights, it's not that much different than a 20" Model Seven.

Mainly, it comes down to style of hunting for me.

I would not shoot a big game animal at 500 meteres. Not cause it's wrong or any of that s**t, just cause that's not my style.

300 yrds is plenty for me. Throw me a yote, and 500 with glee..
(I really like getting very close to animals, stalking...)

I hunt heavy bush usually. Sometimes theres an opportunity at the treeline or cut line, that is a little ways further, but more often than not it's in the bush. But this way I'm well
well equipped for both

I have had many rifles, and have had issues with the longer barrels, for about 80% of my hunting.

Shorter barrels have always served me well in my big game hunting.

The sights work for me,... quick aquistion in close quarters...

The scope, in a 1.5 - 5x Leupold will give me my close quarters, as well as the far extent of my range. The irons will be nice when i'm in the s**t weather or take a bad tumble..or feel in the mood for using irons..(as I often like to do) this scope will also let me get a little lower with the straight 1 inch..

In short I enjoy short, compact hunting rifles with iron sights, for big game, often scoped with quick detatches

Underscoping?

Well my .02 cents is that too many guys are over scoping...

as for underperforming?

The job done at 300 yrds and less is my aim, so if indeed that happens, performance is optimal to my purpose.

I love your rifle...The fit, finish (no pun intended...ok intended) and quality all speak to the esthetics of the hunt. Good luck next season. You are well equiped.

I will be sighting in this gun on Saturday,...any suggestions for the breaking it in ... and cleaning with the copper bullets?

I used to shoot 1 shot and clean, 2 shots a cooling apart with a clean in beteween, 3 shots a cooling apart with a clean in between., 3 shots consecuitively, then clean.

then 5 shot groups, with a clean after each 5.

This how a gun gun smith told me to do it about 12 years ago, and that's how I have done it since.. just wondering about the cleaning with copper..and if anyone has their won specific way of breaking in.

Thanks

 Thats a tedious sounding process!

Evey gun I've ever seen was shot till it became innacurate or your range trip was done, then cleaned...repeat as neccessary.YMMV :yingyang:

just making light humor...hoping my old buddy from BC would hop in...he knows all about barrel break in requirements... (there aren't any)

I don't break in barrels, I shoot and clean a few times and try not to overheat the barrel..
