The Sako (with pics) FINISHED...DONE...

I am a trendsetter.

Well my goal of broadening my rifle horizons beyond the Lever actions for big game has come full circle today,...

I can honestly say I am very satisfied, in fact, overly satisfied.

When I decided I would move into a bolt action big game rifle, I was a little lost. I had owned a few bolt actions in the past, but never ever formed that bond or confidence in either of them. Perhaps it was because I didn't give them a fair chance, perhaps it was because I went straight for the Magnums instead of starting with something a little more tame. I had my favourite rifle already, and it was easy enough to write off the others and go back to her.

When I decided again that I would give a big game bolt action a chance again, I figured I'd try and do it right. I looked at several rifles...
It finally came down to 4 different Sakos...a 280 a 7mm RM a .260 and a
7mm-08.

The 7mm-08 in a Battue spoke to me. It was the type rifle I like, a classic calibre, and has the range and beyond for my purposes. Throw in that it is a non catalogued rifle and I was on the hook.

guided by the exemplary customer service provided by Clay from Prophet Rivers, the rifle showed up and was all I had wanted.

Along with advice and discussion from a number of you guys, a local gun shop owner and a collector, I decided on a Leupold VXIII 1.5x-5x with Leupold Mounts.

I then put on a set of Butler creek flip up caps, with a see thru for the objective...

An ordinary rifle sling with thumbhole and the Sako emboss finished it off...

Today I tried her out. I took a box of Nosler Partitions and a box of TSX..both factory.

I setup at 100 metres and fired my first shots.

I loved the handling, the recoil and the report of this rifle and calibre...simply a pleasure to shoot.

My first few rounds were low and I played with the dials,..they are pretty nice on the Leupold.

After 5 shots I was doing pretty good.

I didn't fire the partitions as I was qute satisfied with the performance of the TSX's.

I shot off my pack and below are the 15 TSX's that I fired after getting the rifle on target, three 5 shot groups...the centre group was first and then I adjusted to get high and centre with the last 10 shots giving me about 1.5 inches high at 100 metres ( I really liked the Leupold dials)...now do take into consideration this was off a pack, so the 100 metre I guess is somewhere between 1.5 and 2 high. Also, I didn't mark anything or such so the last group in really a 10 shot group, Sometime between now and April 17th I;ll get to the range hopefully,...
I had the little guy today, so I was happy enough to use the fun targets and go out in the woods :D

Thanks for all the comments, positive and negative...and indifferent.

You sure have a great rifle there. And what a perfect scope to mount on it!
I have a 30-06 L61 that I purchased directly from the factory in Finland, in teh mid 1960s. I am wondering about what year yours would be?
If you gave the barrel length, I missed it. It appears quite short, how long is it?
