Hey all,

I've seen the SKS crazed gun nuts out there. I've seen people tote these rifles like they are made of gold.

What in the blazes makes this such a desired rifle? To me, they seem like a weaker, shorter and less pretty version of the Tokarev SVT-40. Why are these rifles so loved?

Opinions and discussion welcome.

A high powered, reasonable quality milspec rifle for $200, with cheap ammo that you can actually find??
Unfortunately I can't stand the things but I get all of the above points...

The Tokarev is nice but the barrel is soo long. How do you manage it in your gun safe or during transport? Other point is the availability of parts if you need them. Cheap and easy to get with the SKS. I love that smell from the surplus ammo. Hmmm.

But I agree, if ammunition price wouldn't be an issue, I would fire my M14-305 all day long. Absolutely no comparison.

Just got a CZ858, let's see how I like that one with the cheap ammo.

No one totes a $200 rifle like they are made of gold. I think you are exaggerating a little.

It is a cheap, efficient gun with dirt cheap ammo. They are also accurate and fun to shoot.

Technically the SKS is a smaller younger brother to the PTRS anti-tank rifle, so it is a very strong and well proven design. :)

And this great pic below is a 56K warning...

Also the SKS is also a great rifle to get new shooters on. :)

Hey, hey, come on now! I LOVE my SKS. I sleep with her every night, and twice on Saturdays. Beauty, just simple beauty! Ah, what was I talking about? Oh, the SKS. Yeah, right. It's the handiest gun I have for shooting at mountains. (when my buddy gives me some ammo) That's about it.

SKS
Pros: Cheap, durable, reliable, cheap ammo. Can hit a man sized target at 300 yards, and a car-sized one at 500, with irons that go near 1000, for hitting a small area/building. Throws a 124gr .30 caliber at 2700 ft/s, making it a suitable medium game caliber. Rifle isn't too big, so it doesn't get in the way.
Cons: Not a tack driver, usually 3 inch groups at 100 yards. Ergonomics that are suitable for Russian midgets. Bad trigger. The rifle could be lighter. Cleaning it properly take a few minutes, even more when using corrosive ammo, so nearly all the time.

I like mine. The hype is justified. (was joking about Russians and/or midgets, no offense to either or both)

Yeah, you better watch it, or you'll have a troup of Russian midgets with SKSs shooting at your house from 1000 yards! Lol

Gotta admit, they have like a 11" LOP. Who, that likes guns in the same style of the SKS, is that small? Also, a couple guys spotting each other could pretty easily hit a house at 1000 yards. AOE fire is great for suppression and I bet it was popular. The 7.62x39 can get there and will still be deadly, even with massive drop.

What makes me laugh is the wannabe's who put after market magazines on it. 20, 30, even 50 round ones and of course there is the snail drum.
All it does is screw up the handling of the rifle.

I have two, and both have the original magazine. Of course I got them for $35 each from an importer friend:D
The bayonets have been removed, the bayonet lug has been removed, and the ONLY other alteration has been to to get rid of the crappy stocks and install moulded ones. Good for shooting tin cans.

Why the hell would someone be talkin smack about the SKS.... You clearly haven't taken one to the range.

Great rifle to have, and accurate enough.

1. the gun itself costs $200 brand new
2. it is about the cheapest center fire rifle you will ever shoot (I think) at $179 per 1120rounds
3. I've pumped over 7 crates (7840 or so rounds) of ammo through mine without a jam, malfunction, misfire or any other problem
4. hell of alot more fun to plink with than a .22
5. about a billion aftermarket accessories that you can get if its your cup of tea
6. my ar is restricted, my sks I can pack into the bush if I want
7. I have several semi auto rifles of all makes and caliber's, and for a non restricted, ive found it to be super reliable, more so than my mini14 or 30
8. a brainless monkey (or Rusky peasant) could strip it down out in the forest without any trouble
9. I can pick off clays at 200 yards all day, and for the price of the rifle, please tell me you have a less expensive one that shoots better
10. its got about 2% of the kick of an SVT40, so speaking for myself anyway, I can dump out a clip significantly more steadily with an SKS than an SVT

I could probably go on all day. the Svt is a great rifle, and in now way do I think the SKS is a beat all gun or anything, I mean, I love my AR way more, and my m14 all in all is a better more sturdy rifle than the SKS as well, but if I could only own an SVT40 or an SKS, I would personally stick with the SKS every time. Im finding it harder to get my hands on 7.62x54r all the time and it pisses me off, as well as I haven't been able to find any spare SVT mags, which would be #11 on my list anyway, that's my .02 cents. Im sure that there are many who will disagree with me, but so many people #### on the SKS saying its an inaccurate pos, and while its not as accurate as an AR by any stretch of the imagination, its an awesome gun imo, and id never get rid of either of mine. Ill shoot my first one to death, if that's possible, then work on the next one:D, and in the meantime, ill have spent a small fraction of you die-hard SVT fans:)
