The SL8 Mods, Info and FAQ Thread

Just finished my load development. Best load was 27.6 CFE 223 behind hornady 53gn V-max. Shot a .390" center to center 3 rnd group. and that was all horizontal with next to no vertical dispertion.

Looking to drop my AR for a NR rifle. Im looking at either Tavor/ XCR-L or SL8. Uses are Hunting varmin,target/ 3 gun and all other bush gun, etc. Can these rifles use 5.56mm? How much am i looking at spending to get this to have normal buttstock/lower? I cant stand the way the gun arrives.

- AR mag adapter? Still easy to get? Anyone try a 50 cal beuwofe mag?
- Is there a new sl8 coming out?
- I got a lot of ammo in 62 gr 5.56 xm855

-Hunting; What kind of varmints? Large stuff like coyotes the Tavor and XCR-L will do fine. Doing in 200m shots on crows, you might need the MOA the SL8 provides.
-3 Gun; The Tavor being a bullpup will suck for reloading. The XCR-L will do well being similar to the AR. The SL8 will suck for anything needing close in speed It's a tank. ( I should try it)
- Bush gun; All will be good but the SL8 is heavy. It's long range accuracy might be desired for that shot you need to pull off though.
- 5.56? There marked 223 but are 556. Mine shoots 2-3 MOA from 855 about what a 20" stock AR will do. It will shine with handloads or match ammo much better (MOA)
- Buttstock; the common way was to replace the lower with a Hera Arms BCK2. Those are rare now as the Canadian supplier ended importation of Hera stuff. Getting one from the States or Europe might be your only option. The alternative is some of the other G36 grip conversions but are hard to get from the states. Many hate the original stock. I found it fine. I have the Hera but I just lucked out. has not effect on accuracy and the original stock is lighter.
-AR mag well; Not needed. Nice if you want capacity. Easy to get, install, work perfectly with LAR15's and my AA .50 mags. Go for the 5/7. the 5/10 are too long for good bench shooting. Never tried the reported crappy PCV.
- New SL8; Assuming you are referring to the HK 243 (closer to the G36 than an SL8) Won't be as accurate as an SL8 and as sold it will be restricted. It is coming out soon. Dealers are receiving them in Europe now. HK moves at the speed of molasses.
- Got lots of 855; Yep it will shoot it. Just wont be uber accurate. 2-3 MOA

I offer you our guest room for the weekend If you want to come down and put it through it's paces.

Nice group! Were you able to replicate performance with more shots fired? Any other recommended combinations? I'm happy with MOA, don't think I'd have the patience to develop a .5 MOA load.

I haven't started to build a load for my new SL8 yet but was very, very pleased to see the accuracy of a load I developed for another gun, 26 gr varget, 55 gr Berger VLD, about 1.5 MOA for 10 shots, 2 of which were probably shooter error and they brought the group from MOA to 1.5 MOA.

^^ I had some time this weekend to try some more groups, here are the results. The squares in the pic are 1cm and each circle is 1 inch outside edge to out side edge.

I started with some norinco surplus, those are the scattered 4 shots on the left side of the paper in the first pic. I then turned to my second target on the next picture. Group one was in the center circle looked nice went to the top right circle and pulled the very fist shot. so I went to the bottom right target, shots 1 and 2 are the ones vertical stacked hole in the circle, I then Pulled the third one out side and decided to put one more on target and was the one on the left in the circle. Finally back on the first picture I let a buddy of mine try a few rounds, he is a firearms noob. Has shot some .22, some .410, 30-30 before all plinking style at cans 20 meters away. The group on the top right is his. So I will say this is a 3/4 moa Load, capable of 1/2 MOA

Well you got me there. My concoction of 60gr Nosler Varminter, over 22.5gr of AA2230, Nosler case, CCI primers, 2.260. Gets me consistent 1 MOA. Good load you got there. Might try it.

Anyone know if Airsoft stocks will fit?

The recoil is very low (imho) and the difference between $50 or $250 is a lot right after I buy the weapon.

Will fit what? The HK243, a HERA kit, a G36 conversion or factory SL8? Usually the airsoft version will fit the first 3.

It probably will fit. At the most it might need minor fitting. I heard that the Airsoft IDZ versions are not strong enough and the moving part locks (for LOP and comb) fail when put on SL8/G36 conversions.

This may have been covered already in one of the 975 post of this thread, but I'll throw it up anyways:

Who here has attempted (and been successful) at converting their SL8 to 300 blackout?

I don't know why I would need such an expensive project - obviously a new barrel blank would be needed, but one could reuse all of the original parts to complete the project.

Anyone?

What do you mean Mod... doesn't your stay out to the side when pushed towards the opposite side?

With mine if I push it hard enough it then is supposed to work as a forward assist... I don't believe it springs back when fired, but could be wrong.
