The SL8 Mods, Info and FAQ Thread

Now I got some miss fire problem to fire Norinco 5.56 ammo
looks like the hammer didn't hit it hard enough
Does that mean I need new hammer spring or new hammer?

Anyone else experience same problem ??

Never heard of the problem with the SL8. Have you run the same ammo in another hammer fired 5.56 like an AR. Just curious if its a spring tension issue or a surplus ammo issue?

Yes I fired the same ammo in my XCR223 and every single shot fired
Also I notice the fire pin mark is very light on SL8 compare to XCR
and I knew XCR has very strong spring because it was design to fire both 223
and 7.62x39 soviet surplus ammo
That's why I am point the problem straight to the hammer spring
because for me it's looks like it

Any other suggestion guys?
and where can I get the replacement spring if I need one?

Thanks

well I switch the trigger group from TN lower to HERA lower and switch back
few times and following the online instructions
I am pretty sure both spring are on the tension
but I may not put them together right? I will take look at it again

Also my SL8 is the eariler 4 version and the year code is "AC"
mean made by 2002. Does it make any difference?

SPUHR magwell is here!

I was on my way out to hunt on the weekend when it showed up. It took me about 15 minutes to install it at my friends kitchen table using only the HK multi tool.

The kit includes the new magwell, bolt catch and bolt catch pin. Magwell is ambidextrous, made of polymer. The new bolt catch is all metal and is ambidextrous also. The fit and finish of the magwell is excellent. I put a 100 round though it and it worked perfectly. The new extended bolt catch functions exactly like it should.

Remove factory buttstock and magwell (don't need factory magwell)
Remove factory mag release, pin and spring. ( don't need these)
Remove bolt catch pin, hammer pin, hammer springs, hammer and bolt catch. (don't need factory bolt catch and pin)
Install new extended bolt catch, factory hammer springs, hammer and new bolt catch pin.
Install buttstock and new magwell. The magwell push pin went in, but it was a little snug.

So here it is:

Wow looks good
Btw does new bolt catch work with factory mag wall?

Also can you take few picture when the mag installed?

Thanks

That's what I've been waiting for:) So where did you order from... Coretac?

Yup. Got it from Coretac Solutions.

The tab that engages the magazine follwer is longer on the SPUHR bolt catch. I think it would get hung up on the rounds in the magazine if you tried to use it with the factory mag well.

( Are you still having issues with you SL8? )

hera arms sl8 top rail

Iam not sure if anyone has seen these yet, but Hera arms has come out with small low pro top rails. The look like they are only big enough for a small 1x optic
sl8rail.jpg

The should be around $160, probably be a month or 2 before you can get your hands on them.

I still like the KAC rail better, but look like a good alternative.

ok I am new to the SL-8 world to say the least but I have become obsessed with them!!! I was just looking at the Wanstalls website and the picture they have on there for the new SL8-6 does not appear to have the stepped in magwell like the originals, to me it looks like it can accept a double stack mag from the factory. Is this an error? or simply picture choice? or are they now able to accept the double stack mags right from the factory now? If this has already been discussed somewhere on this forum please just point me in the right direction or give me a quick simple answer.
thanks

Welcome to the addiction! All Canadian SL8's should come with a double stack magazine. The single stack was a US-based issue and if you are looking at an SL8 (new or used) that has a single stack be sure to research all of the other mods you would need to do to convert over. For instance, the US style bolt won't extract from a double stack, so you would need to change that. Check out the stickies on the first page, they are a great way to get started on all of the background info, mods etc..

thanks mike! I have been through most of the SL-8 stickies on here but i guess i never put 2 and 2 together that its only the american issued ones that have the single stack mags

I have to put a caveat here in that the extended catch works great with the factory butt stock, but I found with the HERA BCK2 I had to do some file work on the Hera BCK2 and on the extended bolt catch (EBC). The problem I found was that the "ramp" portion of the EBC was 1.2 mm taller than the Factory bolt catch and it did not sit down correctly in the slot in the BCK2. When you put the mag pin in it was too high and jammed against the bolt carrier. Also on the EBC they had a slight radius on the bottom of the ramp piece that contributed to it sitting too high when installed. A little time with a file and it was good to go. I only ran 10 shots through it but didn't have any issues after fixing with the file.

When I tried it on the HK butt stock, prior to file work, it was fine with no jamming of the bolt carrier.

I also got the new top ramp and the short hand guard. Fit and finish is great. It makes the SL8 look quite a bit different but would be good for those that complain about the SL8 being muzzle heavy.

A few questions for you SL-8 experts

Which H&K handguard is pictured in Hera-Arms's website for their BCK Gen 2.
ht tp://www.hera-arms.com/#!bck/c1nni

I know it's not the short G36c. Essentially whichever one has 4 vent holes (Vs 6 for the stock one).
As for the price for one (?), in comparison to the B&T rails?
Availability?
Weight? Are the HK pieces lighter than the B&T rails (of the same / comparable length)?

Which barrel would that be (pictured)? If I understood the different lengths offered, all of the H&K shorter barrel are all under 18.5", thus all restricted. If so, have any of you had their SL8 barreled machined down to 18.5" as per our NR barrel lenght designation? Or simply have had a complete new barrel made by a gunsmith?

I can only assume that with:
a) shorter and lighter barrel
b) shorter and lighter handguard and
c) off with the long top rail top rails (that I always found..well...not that great looking) and use the Hera top rail kit

-> one would end up with a platform that would eliminate a good portion of the "it's darn heavy" critic of SL8s?

Or am I completely out to lunch on this chain of thought?

When using the HERA BCK Gen 2, what are the more popular options for buttstock?
In the picture above, that looks like a Bushmaster ACR? Is that correct? Is there a readily available one that looks more like the G36 style, that would painlessly mount to the HERA?
(I dont want to go down the cutting / plastic welding route)

Thanx

Kirk

My answers are in red.

A few questions for you SL-8 experts

Which H&K handguard is pictured in Hera-Arms's website for their BCK Gen 2. G36K handguard

As for the price for one (?), in comparison to the B&T rails? HK G36K new $140 B&T $375 (tax, sipping included)
Availability? Both are available.
Weight? Are the HK pieces lighter than the B&T rails (of the same / comparable length)? HK is slightly lighter, but B&T is aluminum and has more rail space.

The HERA one looks like it was an SL8 that was cut down and threaded. I have Had my SL8 barrel cut to 18.5 and the barrel re-profiled to save weight. You could have a new one made from scratch, but that would cost $500+/-. Herron Arms might be able to help with that.

Yes. I did a, b and c and find it much better balanced.

Most popular is the ACR folding stock. It will also accept the ACR fixed stock and any AR-15 Buttstock. These are the only stocks that the Gen 2 will accept.

It seems like a great time to get into this. Last time I checked it was going to be a long painful process to get all the pieces, but right now Wolverine has:

SL8-4 In stock
H.E.R.A. Gen 2 BCK in stock
Bushmaster ACR in stock
Spear Mags in stock
and a nice choice of BT rails, all in stock.

And thats just at one sponsor site.

Now I realise that won't give you a perfect replica of a G36, but it certainly sets you well along the path to owning a nice variant.

Thanks CNADNSL8-5, much appreciated. I had not seen that picture, even though it's only 6 pages back!

I've been speaking with Ian @ Herrons Arms about the conversion to NR of a Swiss Carbine. I am now comparing the total price for both the H&K (with a list of mods to essentially make it looks like the Hera product. I would install whichever rail would allow the install of an Elcan Spector DR or another short optics) and Swiss NR Carbine. Both need the mag well adapter to accept AR mags; need to find which is the best product for the H&K.

As a side note - the cost of a high quality barrel (Krieger), turned from a new blank, with a machined-in flash hider and then Ceratoke'd is quite a bit more $$, but totally worth it in my opinion. It keep the overall length at a total of 18.5" Vs 18.5" of barrel + Flash Hider or Muzzle Brake. The downside is that you can't swap FH or MB's if you want too later on.

Here's another question that I didn't find a clear-cut answer on - the trigger. Is the SL8 trigger a "what you see is what you get" trigger?

Or is there a possibility to drop in a high quality trigger (i.e. Geisselle or other).

Or is the one H&K option the G36 trigger group (it could be just as good as an after market, I simply do not know). If that is the case, would that trigger group fit in the Hera Gen 2 BCK? Or does it only fit in another H&K assembly?

Thanks again
Ben
