The SL8 Mods, Info and FAQ Thread

You are right and I am wrong... I was arguing the SL8 thinking my HK223... yes you do need that barrel wrench, but I have not torqued mine down, just tightened it up as much as it was roughly to take off.

No problems, and Im pretty sure there I no way I over tightened it...

ammo question(s):

has anyone shot the MFS 223 Rem, 62gr SP. Russian made, Zinc plated steel case through their SL8? results? any issues?

This is an awesome thread!! There is sooooo much info here, I thought there was nothing to be done with an SL8 until I found this!! My new SL8 is on the way from Wolverine due to arrive next Friday!! I think un-thumb holing the thumbhole will be more than a challenge...

Has anyone checked muzzle velocity on there SL8's? I did my first batch of reloading for it. 69 smk 25.2-26 gn of CFE 223 cci br 4 primers. Max load from hogdons online data center this is is 25.8 at mz of 3029. When I chronied that load I got a av of 2632. 400 fps difference. The same happened with american eagle 55 fmj, supposed to be running at 3200 and I was getting 2800 ish. Is this normal for a Sl8? Maybe because of the 20 inch barrel, and being a gas gun??

I believe that's the Russian stuff I shot though mine in the fall. The worst accuracy of any ammo I've tried, maybe 3 MOA. Most generic stuff goes into around 2 MOA, and factory target ammo (steel match) nudges MOA.

Feeds and functions fine, though.

Quick question, when installing the ACR folding stock on the Hera Arms Conversion how do you remove the black rubber piece that prevents the stock from lining up flush?

I bought a converted SL8/G36 from IRUNGUNS a few months ago and I've been having issues with it. When I first got it, the bolt would not lock back on an empty magazine either when I manually cocked it or after firing off the last round from a magazine. I contacted IRUNGUNS and rather than having me ship it back to them, they agreed that it'd be OK if I took it to a local gunsmith and sent them the bill. The first time the gunsmith looked at it, he found that the bolt catch spring was lined up on the wrong detent. After he adjusted it, the bolt would lock back on an empty magazine when it was manually racked. I thought the problem was solved but when I took the rifle out to the range, I found that the bolt would still not lock back upon firing off the last round of a magazine.

I took it back to the smith's and he worked on it for a week or so. Thoroughly cleaned it, reseated everything, checked spring tensions, and tried a few other things but the issue still persists. It seems like the bolt is only traveling back about 90-95% of the full range of motion. It picks up rounds from the mag and ejects them cleanly, but it won't lock open. I've tried SL8 mags, Spear 5/30 mags, and a G36 mag modified to fit the magwell I have but I get the same result on every mag. The smith did notice that the pistol grip/lower is a little bit narrower than the SL8 upper and he thought that the two Allen screws might be pinching things in. I'm going to try to insert some washers and see if that fixes the issue.

Has anyone had any similar issues? Any tips on how to fix this? It's very disappointing to spend so much on a rifle and not have it function properly. I know this has been an issue for some using AR-15 mag adapters but I'm not using an AR-15 set up.

Thanks. I've already had a look through the bulk of this thread and compared my lower to that photo. Everything seems in order. I'm stumped. I will try a different smith here in Vancouver this week and if he can't sort it, I guess I'll try and send it back to IRUN to see if they know what is amiss.

While I have not had this problem with my SL8, I have seen it with other firearms. Weak or incorrectly installed springs and bolt catches can be the problem. I have seen the contact surfaces where the bolt and catch contact worn causing this. I am sorry your having this trouble. If you could find someone near you with an SL8 that could allow you to swap one part at a time, bolt assy, catch, etc. You could trouble shoot the problem. Stock bolt catches are in stock at wolverine for about $25.

I just rec'd the Spuhr magwell adapter and had my SL8 apart to test fit. Is it mandatory to replace the bolt catch when installing the Spuhr magwell? I popped out the stock mag release, dropped in the magwell and test fitted an LAR mag and it was way too tight and I had a helluva tie getting the mag back out. I did this without swapping the bolt catch. Mags slide in and out of the magwel just fine on it's own (when not on the gun). Tried a couple of other mags (steel and pmag) and they went in really tight as well, just didn't push them in hard as I did not want to fight them out.

The new bolt catch is required for the bolt to operate properly on the last round hold open function. It is longer than the stock one. The mags might be getting jammed between the old catch and front of the mag well.
Also, have you removed the two inside tabs inside the receiver? These also may be causing a tight fit. There are details of this near the bottom of post one on the first page if you are not sure about the tabs.

Have you had any luck solving you issue?
