The STG-44 (.22cal)

These things are wayyyyyy too much fun!!!

Every time I take it out somewhere, people want to look at it, touch it, lift it, shoot it. Once I explain that it's a .22LR semi-auto copy of the first ever "assault rifle" from WWII people just want to keep shooting it!!

That sucker's got a place in my safe for as long as I'm breathing.

Me as well, then again I have a fondess for firearm history being German descent:)

Anybody know if that plastic buffer just behind the bolt carrier can be replaced with a metal one? if that is a working change than there will be no plastic at all in this STG-44 (.22lr)

Why wouldn't you use an original "Schmeisser" STG 44 Scopemount"? For instance, you can get it at Gun Gear.ca
At the moment, haven't found anyone that has any actually in stk. Gun Gear does not have live inventory, they don't have any either. Cabela's has 30-some on order, supposed to have been shipped in March, still haven't shown.
I got the Dophee mount, it is only barely short enough to grip the ledge, it puts the front ring in a position that barely allows the charger handle to work, for now it is operable, but, a bit crowded. Certainly 100% better than the UTG MP5 mount. And being a low, short rail, it doesn't give much room to adjust scope position if you are using rings with wide bases like the UTG QD rings. And when I pulled the iron sight off, I discovered they had used two different screws, or maybe, the one was probably an incompletely formed head on it, one was Phillips, one was an odd sized "Robertson" that struck me as being more of an incomplete head on it. Had fun getting it out, don't know where they found a tool to install that puppy, or why they put it in, but, they got it tightened up in there. That kind of QC makes a person wonder.
I'm going to go try it out on some gophers today, see how that goes.

Remember you can add washers to raise the rear sight black that way you do not need the ramp set so high.

I was shooting at 25m with both the scope and irons and found both about the same for grouping.

At 50 yards I am sure that is where the optics will do better.

Mods, don't know if this is okay but I thought this link will help other CGNers out.

I want one but i get bored of shooting 22 after a few trips. I am stuck at a local range that is setup for pistols so it gets boring shooting 22 since you are not able to shoot long distance.

Strange. If you go to their website click "Store" and then click on "STG 44 Parts" you can see it in stock....

05Rav, there is nowhere on Gun Gear's website that says if the product is actually on hand, it just says they will happily sell you one if you order from them. Lots of stores like that around. Haven't even rec'd the acknowledgement of the order. yet, (FRAUD ALERT) sent the loot on the 21st. Waiting for a callback from Gun Gear at present, see what he says. may be an order glitch on his end, may not be. With shipping, it is the same price as Cabela's anyhow, may cancel, if he doesn't have any, and wait to see if I ever get the tall stanag mount from Amazon.
Anyway, got out with it on some gophers yesterday, too slow on a chance at a yote, think he was chasing the Roadrunner, didn't spot him til too late. In range, but, skylined and motoring. Got some gophers, hard to spot, low in the hole head shots.
Scope sight-in consisted of 4-5 shots to bring it up from 2" low, dead centre, and a 5 shot group to confirm. No fuss , no muss there, liked that a lot.
Leaper's 3-12x44 w/mildot, illuminated reticle (36 colours, too!!), worked well, heavy li'l sucker though. Gun is over 11lbs now, have to rig up a sling for sure. I have two 1885's that are lighter than that, one with a 6.5-20 Leupold on it, other with a 4.5-14 Zeiss.
Twer a fun day out, everything worked like it was supposed to

Finally got the stanag mount for the scope, had to shorten the lock leg a bit as the cam rotated a bit short of where it needed to be to let it drop into the lock slot. Worked better than the Dophee mount for charge handle clearance, can leave the rear sight on, and for setting eye relief. With the medium height rings it shoulders nicely, still get a decent cheek weld. That mount isn't light either, pretty sure it is in the 12lb+ range now.

UTG MP5 Stanag mount with picatinny rail, is how it's advertised, on Amazon. Had to come out of the US. 10 days to get it by dogsled. I thought it would be pretty high for a reasonable cheek weld, but, it gets it down on my shoulder better than a low rail with high rings. It is high, but, works OK for me.
