The STURMGEWEHR 44/22 thread:

High Velocity, Full Copper Jacket

I've been using CCI Velocitors (1435fps) and Mini-Mags (1260fps)
in the 'Stuggie'.
Yesterday we tried some CCI "Quiets" (710fps).
Predictably, the Quiets failed to cycle.

On Day One, my first two full magazines (Velocitors) had a few 'failures to extract' but after that, things smoothed out entirely. The next 400rd (Mini-Mags) went through without fail. I don't think the ammo was at fault for the early failures so much as the weapon just required some break-in to 'loosen up'.

I just picked up a brick of American Eagles (38gr; 1260fps) but have not tried them yet.

I'll only be using copper plated HP ammo from now on. I think the all-lead bullets result in more fouling.

Thanks for the info.
As I await my pal application to be approved I've been doing a lot of research and reading to pick my first rifle. I seem to have settled on the gsg stg-44 as it is just too iconic to pass up.
I'll also be picking up a norinco jw-25a to complete a period accurate matched set.

I like .22s for cheap fun.

I like the look of those Baby Mausers! I've always been a big fan of milsurps, but I'm finding that the old originals are too nice/rare to shoot very often.
I'm happy that GSG (& Norinco) has seen fit to make replicas of some of these classics now in (cheap and plentiful) .22. I've got lots of CF rifles, each for their intended purpose, so I'm fine with plinking with these look-alike guns. No way could I afford the origals in today's market. Plus, all these .22 RFs are ...
NON-Restricted! 'Bonus'.

BTW-- I'm laying odds that the next one Blue Line brings in will be the GSG MP 40 in .22. I know it looks terrible with that huge faux 'suppressor' on the muzzle,
but I'm told that it's threaded and will screw off easily...
& i'm not getting my hopes up that GSG will be offerring the StG 44/22 in any other caliber, since they only make guns in .22 chamberings. Also not expecting one to come from any other arsenals.
Keep us posted on your acquisitions.

I think you need to do more research

To nice, rare or expensive to shoot - So that's Something I decided to do as they became available - was to start a collection of replica WW2 rimfire rifles / SMG replica's.

With the announcement of Kingston firearms .22 Garand and M14 at the 2015 shot show (based on the 10/22 if I'm not mistaken) - they'll make a great addition. When / if they show up or if we get them here in Canada is anyone's guess. http://www.kingstonarmory.com/

That's my plan in a nutshell.
BTW, what Thompson is that?
I was also planning on adding the pietta pps-50 to the collection.

If the Pietta PPS-50 was more true to "scale", I would do the same - to me it doesn't look close enough to a PPSH-41.

The Thompson was a kit designed, built and sold by a GCN member some time ago: I've never seen a better one.
I made a couple of improvements to it here and there to make it look more Thompson like - it's definitely my favourate.

I would definately love to add the GSG MP40 to this group, (non restricted, of course).

By the way, does anyone have an update on the status of the GSG MP-40 for Canadian sales?

Trigger>>>

Good question. IDK-- The GSG site says the Sturmer has an adjustable trigger pull, and there's a tiny allen wrench in the baggie in the box, but there's no mention of it in the owner's manual. I tried contacting GSG, but nobody keeps answering. I guess it's usually nighttime over there.
I'm going to try phoning our distributor in Vancouver about it. Last month I got patched right thru to the head guy.

Well, my pal showed up in the mail this week.
I now have a stg-44 on its way to me complete with 3 mags, a sling ,and bag. Bought it from the EE and very happy with the deal.
Also picked up a chiappa m1 22 locally. Will probably order a jw-25a from marstar later today.
Well on my way to a nice little reproduction collection.

Buy lots of ammo, it's cheap and you're gonna need it.

Hey, good for you. Congratulations and 'welcome to the club'!ch
I've been out plinking with my 'Stugie' several times now. It didn't need much to sight it in, other than to figure out the calibration of the rear sight. That's really pretty simple:
"5.0" represents 50 meters. It would've been nice had GSG bothered to mention this in their little booklet. I had to figure that out by trial and error until it started to make sense. The maximum range marked on the scale is "10" or 100 meters. So that seems to be the approximate elevation scale, and it's close enough to call it either meters or yards, which ever scale you're used to. I'm assuming the numbers are marked off in meters, since these Sturmies are made in Germany. The 'out of the box' windage was off slightly, but I was able to correct that by screwing with the small knob on the side of the scale. Turning it clockwise moves the sight notch to the right. Next time out I'll find out what size shot groups I can shoot at 50. I've not tried to hit anything out beyond that yet.
Have fun, but I'll warn you now-- It's real easy to burn thru 75 rd very quickly with those three magazines! :ar15:

Here's an interesting review from the UK I came across the other day:
http://www.gunmart.net/gun_review/norinco_jw_25a_.22_rimfire

BTW-- I just got one of those Mini-Maus as well! I've not had a chance to get it out to the range yet. Its sight is calibrated all the way out to 200, but I expect that's being optimistic!

Be sure to keep us posted on your progress.
Cheers

Thanks for the info on the sight calibration, that'll come in handy.
Ordered the jw-25a from canadaammo this afternoon, can't beat the free shipping.
Starting to get a sense as to why and how easy it is to start accumulating these things.

I got my Mini Maus from Canada Ammo as well. The Free Shipping was bonus.

Like all addictions, gun collecting starts innocently enough but soon becomes compulsive. I've been averaging one every six weeks this year. They come along without warning, some go out the back door to make room for others in my (two) safes, but the net result is that I'm going to need a third safe pretty soon.

The dovetail grooves on the Mini Maus are calling for a scope, at least for accuracy testing. I've got the prime candidate mounted on my air rifle, but I may spring for a pair of Weaver rings topped with a fixed 4x as an inexpensive addition.

The Stuggie is going to have to wait until I find the proper mount and a period correct-looking scope.
Hoping to get 1" groups at 50 from both. My Savage MkII will do that routinely, but I'm not predicting what kind of results I'll get from this new pair.

Canadaammo sells the stg mount for $45. I was thinking about picking one up but I don't think I'll scope it.
I have a compact 4x32 scope coming for the jw-25a as that will be used for pest control. And I like the look of the smaller scope on the Mauser.
