The later models without the side grooves are actually considered more valuable as production was significantly less. IE 1943 and later.
A real sniper model with the side grooves and the one back groove on the top of the receiver goes for around $500. I found one of these, and while it's a refurb the metal is perfect and from the trigger along with looks I don't think it was ever issued. It feels brand new. The stock was also a AVT navy.
Neat rifles, and not too expensive for collecting. I prefer them over the SKS.
